Linear Volcanic eruptions occurred here 30 Sept. 2007 but are not unexpected in so far as this island, the Red Sea, the Gulf of Aden, and the East African rift zone mark the location of a triple tectonic rift junction at which the solid crust of the Earth is splitting and separating.

Numerous cinder cones and historic lava flows are visible in these wikimapia aerial images; they are generally aligned near the center of the linear axis of the island, which exists, like Iceland, for example, because it lies precisely on an active tectonic rift.

Comments

  • Disputed area between Eritrea and Yemen.
  • Note that the Wikipedia article at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jabal_al-Tair_island seems to refer to the island about 200 km NNW as the site of the 30 September 2007 volcanic eruption. The Landsat picture there is clearly not of this island, which is larger and differently shaped.
