Name and family:
Reptiles turkeys that originate from the Emydidae family, is native to America and is also common in many European countries.
Feature and behavior:
The plate is of intense yellow color while the carapace has a green color in the young but with the passing of time the colors tend to darken to become almost black. The scut is replaced periodically, so do not worry, your head has drawings made of yellower streaks more accentuated over eyes than with age tend to darken. They are Pacifiche species, usually living in groups not exceeding the dozen specimens and their life expectancy is around 30/35 years. There are many subspecies, but the most famous are Trachemys Scripta Script, Trachemys Scripta Troostii, Trachemys Scripta Elegans, differs for red-orange spots on the head rather than yellow.
Fishes’s coexistence:
It prefers shallow streams, with soft backdrop, little current, abundant sunshine and rich vegetation. Their favorite habitat are lakes, ponds and rivers by the slow and muddy waterway with plenty of aquatic plants. Unfortunately, coexistence with small fish can be a risk, it is not a certainty, but it could give them up.
Sexual dimorphism and breeding:
The female has tail and short nails and round carapace and is larger in size. The tail of the male is longer, robust, large and broad at the base, very developed nails especially at the extremities of the front and flattened carapace. The coupling takes place in water, during which the male performs a singular dance by rubbing the front nails against the female’s muzzle. The female will be ready for deposition after about 30 days, and will look for a sandy and damp place where to lay the eggs. The eggs hatch after 70-120 days, depending on the incubation temperature which must be between 26 and 32 degrees Celsius.
