In February of 2007 we began taking orders for our second offering of the popular STL-11000M camera with a class 2 CCD, in addition to the class 1 CCD that we have offered since the first STL.

CCD Array Pixel CCD Size Diagonal Area
KAF-11002M/CM 4008 x 2672 9u 36x24mm 43.4mm 868mm2

This model uses the latest KAI-11002M CCD.  When we began making the STL-11000M camera, the monochrome CCD was available only in a class 1 version.  The color CCD was available in a class 2 but unlike most of Kodak's other class 2 CCDs, the color version allowed up to 10 column defects.  With the introduction of the Class 2, however, Kodak began offering the monochrome version of this CCD with improved cosmetic specifications.  The class 2 mono sensor allows a maximum of only 2 column defects.  On such a large sensor, one or two column defects out of 4,000 does not significantly impact the image quality and in all other performance specifications such as dark current, noise and quantum efficiency, the class 2 sensor is identical to the class 1.  Our initial offering of this class 2 model sold out very quickly due to the very low price we were able to achieve using the KAI-11000M CCD.  While we cannot match the price we had before due to the higher cost of CCDs we will nevertheless offer this at $1000 below the original list price for the Class 2 color camera, and now an additional savings of almost $1000 can be added to the value of this model with the addition of the Baader LRGB and H-alpha filters.  A word or two about class 2 sensors.  Before we ordered a large supply of class 2 sensors we built up several cameras with class 2 CCD in them for testing to make sure that they would be acceptable for our astro imaging customers.  With a maximum of two column defects (out of a total of 4,008 columns) they are quite acceptable.  A column defect may or may not be visible under typical imaging conditions.  Those that can be seen are generally easy to remove with typical image processing tools.  Insofar as dark current and read noise is concerned, the class 2 sensor specifications are identical to a class 1.  We do not hesitate to recommend these as excellent lower cost alternatives to the class 1 STL-11000 cameras we have made and will continue to make for those who want no column defects.

The STL-11000M-C2 camera is fully compatible with all other STL accessories such as the Remote Guiding Head, AO-L Adaptive Optics device, 50mm RGB, narrowband and photometric filters, water cooling system, and more.  For more information on these STL cameras please see the Product Descriptions and Specifications in our On-Line Catalog

Of course, if you prefer a camera with no column defects, the same offer applies to the Class 1 STL-11000M for the price of $8795 instead of $9780.

Sale Price $5995

The STL-4020M is an excellent value.  The camera uses the latest KAI-4022M CCD, a big brother of the KAI-2020M/CM used in the ST-2000 cameras.  It has a 2048 x 2048 array of 7.4 micron pixels with very low read noise, low dark current and no column defects.  The CCD has twice the imaging area of the KAI-2020 and about 55% more than an ST-10.  It also has antiblooming protection and a fast exposure time of 0.001 seconds making it excellent for imaging the sun and moon.  But its large CCD and relatively small pixels makes it good, too, with camera lenses and short fast refractors.  The antiblooming feature of the interline CCD is excellent at reducing or eliminating blooms from bright stars.  It is available in both monochrome and single shot color versions.

KAI-4021M/CM 2048 x 2048 7.4u 15.2x15.2mm 21.4mm 230mm2

As with all STL cameras, standard features include a built-in 5-position 50mm filter wheel (the single shot color camera also includes a 50mm UV/IR blocking filter for best color balance), built-in autoguider, two-stage cooling, water circulation capability, and remote guide head port.

Options include an 8-position filter wheel, remote guide head, and AO-L Adaptive Optics.   Software support includes Windows XP, Window Vista (32 bit), Mac and Linux.

High Sensitivity Monochrome KAF-6303E CCD with built-in TC-237 Guiding CCD,
5 Position Filter Wheel, and 4 piece 50.8mm LRGB filter set from Baader Planetarium.

Sale Price $8995

The STL-6303E has been in production since the beginnings of the STL series.  It is the camera of choice for those wanting a large field of view, good resolution and high sensitivity.  The CCD is 4 times the size of the KAF-1603 CCD used in the ST-8 camera (and 16 times the size of the KAF-0402 used in the ST-7).  It is the somewhat smaller than the STL-11000, however it has higher sensitivity than the STL-11000, particularly in the red, with the same sized pixels.   This camera is an excellent choice as a high end imaging system for large SCTs and RCs or other scopes where a large field of view and high red sensitivity is desired.   Add the optional 8 position filter wheel and this camera can do double duty as both an excellent imaging camera using RGB filters and a scientific photometric instrument using UBVRI photometric filters.

The STL-1001E has been used by professional astronomers at some of the largest observatories in the world.  With its large image area (1 inch square) 24 micron pixels and high QE, it is well suited to large telescopes of long focal length.  Typically amateurs use this model for photometry studies and minor planet searches, but it is also an excellent imaging camera on any big telescope.   The CCD has a larger area than the 6303 but fewer pixels due to the large pixel size.
