Women around the world are still dealing with some serious inequality issues compared to men. This discrimination problem isn't new, and it keeps women from getting a fair shake in many aspects of life, like job opportunities, access to credit, healthcare, and education.

Although gender inequality is a global issue, it's particularly pronounced in many African countries. Despite these nations officially supporting international agreements designed to protect women's property and inheritance rights, these rights often remain elusive in practice.

In fact, according to the 2023 Women, Peace, and Security (WPS) Index report, many African countries rank among the lowest out of 177 nations globally in terms of women’s inclusion, justice, and security.

Notably, all the countries that are stuck at the bottom of this list have one thing in common: they've experienced armed conflicts between 2021 and 2022. Particularly troubling is the year 2022, marked by the highest recorded casualties from conflict-related incidents since the Rwandan genocide in 1994.

Interestingly, no country attained perfection in terms of the WPS Index, and the results reveal wide disparities across countries and regions. The WPS Index offers a tool for identifying where resources and accountability are needed most to advance women’s status - which benefits us all.
