NASHVILLE (April 4, 2018) – Nashville SC of the United Soccer League (USL) announced
the signing of defender David Edgar pending league and federation approval. Edgar is a veteran of England’s Premier League and Major League Soccer (MLS) in his 13-year professional career.
From Kitchener, Ontario, Canada, Edgar has been a mainstay on the Canadian National Team since 2011, making 42 appearances for his country including as a captain for the squad during the 2015 CONCACAF Gold Cup. He last appeared for the team as a substitute in Canada’s 1-0 win over New Zealand on March 24, 2018, playing 31 minutes.
“David is a very experienced center back who offers real physical and central experience,” said Nashville SC head coach Gary Smith. “He has played at a top level for his country and in his club career, and he is a good addition to our already strong backline.”
Edgar, 30, debuted for Newcastle United’s reserve squad in 2005 before seeing first-team action in the 2006-07 season. The defender scored his first Premier League goal on New Year’s Day 2007 in Newcastle’s 2-2 home draw against Manchester United. Edgar joined Burnley following Newcastle’s relegation after the 2008-09 season and spent one more season in the Premier League.
After six seasons in the English Championship, Edgar joined Vancouver Whitecaps of MLS. He made eight appearances for the club in 2016 before missing the 2017 season with an injury.
Edgar will wear jersey number 11 for Nashville SC. Terms of the signing were not released.
