| Description |
English: A slime mould - Fuligo septica var. flava. This is one of the most common slime moulds in Britain, shown here in its fruiting phase (for the earlier stage, see: 920176).
There are two varieties of this species: var. septica (or "flowers of tan"), found from south-east England to as far north as Yorkshire, and var. "flava", found further north. "Flava" means "yellow", describing its brighter yellow colour; indeed, it often looks "like scrambled egg spilt on a log" [Bruce Ing, "The Myxomycetes of Britain and Ireland"]. As the fruiting body ages, it becomes more brown and crumbly, the spores being dispersed by wind and rain. A colloquial name for this species is the "Dog Vomit Slime Mould". This is perhaps the only slime mould species ever to have had major news coverage. In 1973, unusually wet weather caused the prolific appearance of this species in parts of the USA, leading some there to fear, bizarrely, that these "blobs" were invaders from space.
