| Description |
Red-Shanked Bumble Bee (Bombus ruderarius), collected at Nové Zámky, Slovakia, by Peter Šima. A smaller sized Bumble Bee. Common in Europe. Most bumble bees hang in the northern parts of the Northern Hemisphere. They can handle cold better than other bees and they are bigger than almost any other bee in the regions they live. Given they are colonial and out throughout the warmish part of the year, the math (if it we actually had the data on this) would show that Bumble Bees are dominant pollinators more so than their usually solitary and almost always smaller kin. Plenty of plants realized this a few million years ago and developed tempting pollen and nectar floral platforms just for bumbles.
