Cooke Scotland Sponsors Island Games Athletes

Cooke Aquaculture Scotland proudly sponsored the Orkney and Shetland teams at the 2023 Island Games in Guernsey.

The two teams were among 24 different isles from around the world to compete in a variety of sports, while further creating friendships and memories, and strengthening our island connections.

Athletes were supported through the Cooke Community Benefit Fund. As an intrinsic element of the coastal and rural communities in which we live and work, Cooke supports a variety of local-led events, activities, and community projects that reflect our corporate values as well as those of our teams.

On behalf of the Community Benefit Fund Sponsorship Committee, Murray Spooner, Communications Manager at Cooke Aquaculture Scotland, said: “We are proud to have aided both Orkney and Shetland teams at the 2023 Island Games through our Community Benefit Fund.

“We have enjoyed watching the teams progress throughout the competitions and they have all done incredibly well!

“Cooke is deeply committed to the communities we operate in and it is important to us we contribute to the social network and economic health of the coastal and rural communities around us.

“We welcome applications to our Cooke Community Benefit Fund to support the fundraising efforts of local groups, service clubs and charities.”

On the Shetland side at the Games, Katie Dinwoodie, took home a bronze in the 100m race, Shetland swimmer, Jasmin Smith, came home with a bronze medal for the 50m breaststroke, the women’s triathlon team also secured third place and Seamus Mackay took home a silver medal in the men’s 1500m race. The Shetland football team had some great wins and came seventh in the tournament.

Orkney had numerous victories as well with Aly Kemp taking home bronze in the women’s 10000 metres. Stewart Stanger from the archery team achieved a silver medal success in the single WA 1440 men’s compound and Orkney’s football team earned third place in their group, ninth overall.

On behalf of the Orkney Island Games Committee, Team Manager, Edgar Balfour, said: “Team Orkney thank Cooke Aquaculture Scotland for the generous sponsorship awarded to us. This enabled our young team to travel to Guernsey and compete in the International Island Games 2023.

“Without this kind of invaluable support, participation would be very difficult indeed, and we are very grateful for it.”
