Ogrodzieniec Castle

The ruins of this medieval castle are so impressive, they were used as a filming location by everyone from Roman Polanski to Iron Maiden.

About

Ogrodzieniec Castle was first built in the 12th century, though the original fortification was razed by the Tartars in 1241. A century later, the Włodkowie Sulimczycy family started construction on a new, Gothic castle. In 1655, the castle was damaged by Swedish troops, and began its long decline in ruin, ultimately being used as a source of building materials by its last owner in the 19th century. After being opened to the public in the 20th century, the imposing ruins atop their rocky outcrop have attracted visitors and filmmakers alike. Today, the two surviving towers and labyrinth of passages and corridors spread out over several levels, with fantastic views hidden around rumbling corners. Throughout the year, the castle also hosts special events, ranging from free tours to combat demonstrations. For more information, please visit zamek-ogrodzieniec.pl
