Named in honor of Augusta, princess of Wales (1719-1772), and opened in 1987 by Diana, princess of Wales (1961-1997). It is the largest of the Gardens' seven glasshouses and supports 10 climate zones. (Royal Botanic Gardens is a 300-plus acre public garden and scientific institution dating from the 18th century when Augusta, princess of Wales, improved Frederick Lewis, prince of Wales' (1707-1751), pleasure garden after his death and also created a nine-acre botanic garden in 1759. UNESCO designated Royal Botanic Gardens a World Heritage Site in 2003.)
