TV Remote Function Overview

Applies to:  Wii U Deluxe, Wii U Basic

The TV Remote function on the Wii U console allows you to control your TV, Cable Box, Satellite Box, or other Set-Top Box using the Wii U GamePad.

This function is configured during the first time setup process, but can also be configured via system settings.

To use the TV Remote function, simply press TV on the Wii U GamePad.

Launching this function while using other software will not suspend the software. To suspend the software, press the HOME button first, and then TV.

Depending on what you configure the TV Remote to work with (TV, Cable Box, etc.), you may or may not see all of the available buttons. However, if a button is missing that you would expect to see, our information on TV Remote button troubleshooting may be helpful.

You can use the TV Remote function to perform the following:

  • Turn the TV or other devices on and off by tapping POWER.
  • Switch the current input channel by tapping INPUT.
  • Change the channel by tapping up and down on the CH icons, or by entering the number for a specific channel by selecting the numbers displayed on the Touch Screen and tapping ENT.
  • Adjust the volume by tapping the + or - icons under VOL.
  • View a list of TV programs by tapping GUIDE.
    • The device you have registered in System Settings must have an electronic programming guide in order to use this function.
    • Control the guide by using the +Control Pad, A button, and B button on the Wii U GamePad.
  • Turn the Wii U console on by tapping Play Wii U.
    • This does not appear if the Wii U console is already powered on.
