How to Set up the TV Remote Function

Applies to:  Wii U Deluxe, Wii U Basic

In this article, you'll learn how to set up the TV Remote function.

Note: Verify that the TV is turned on before initiating setup.

Complete these steps

  1. Which type of TV Remote function are you attempting to set up?
    1. Ensure your system has the latest system update installed.
    2. From the Wii U Menu, select System Settings.

    3. Using the Left Stick, scroll to the TV Remote Function icon and press the A Button.
      • If you are prompted with your current settings, tap Change or press the A Button.

    4. Select TV Only.
      • If you have not performed a system update, select TV Remote.

    5. Select the first letter of the device manufacturer's name, and then select the full name from the list that appears.
      • If your manufacturer is not listed, or you are unable to find the manufacturer's name, please read The TV or Cable Box Name or Model Number Is Not Known.
      • Please note: Not all devices are supported, and functionality may vary from country to country. Please ensure you have the most recent system update installed on your Wii U console.

    6. Hold down the L Button and R Button on the Wii U GamePad, and then use the +Control Pad to navigate to the correct signal type.
      • If you were unable to perform a system update, you will need to tap Didn't Work until you reach the correct signal type.

    7. Follow the testing instructions on the Wii U GamePad screen to verify that your device responds.
      • You must tap each test button (volume, input, power) in order to complete the functionality test.

    8. Tap Worked once the functionality test is successful, and then follow the on-screen instructions to complete the setup process.
    1. Ensure your system has the latest system update installed.
    2. From the Wii U Menu, select System Settings.

    3. Using the Left Stick, scroll to the TV Remote Function icon and press the A Button.
      • If you are prompted with your current settings, tap Change or press the A Button.

    4. Select Set-Top Box and TV, and then the type of device you are configuring.
      • If you have not performed a system update, select Other Remote.

    5. Select the first letter of the device manufacturer's name, and then select the full name from the list that appears.
    6. Hold down the L Button and R Button, and then use the +Control Pad to navigate to the correct signal type.
      • If you were unable to perform a system update, you will need to tap Didn't Work until you reach the correct signal type

    7. Follow the testing instructions on the Wii U GamePad screen to verify that your device responds.
    8. Tap Worked once the functionality test is successful, and then tap OK.
    9. Repeat this process for the TV model.
