Oysters are considered an aphrodisiac and  they often appear at romantic dinners accompanied by champagne.

Today we know oysters are there  a good source of zinc, which plays an important role in the process of testosterone formation, and also contains amino acids related to the production of sex hormones. In addition, oysters are a source of selenium, iron, calcium, as well as vitamins A and B12. They are also low in calories - one raw oyster provides us with 8-10 kcal.  

Oysters are characterized by  asymmetric shell.  Have  a flat "cover" and  convex lower part. Both parts  are connecting  together  ligament. The inside of the shell is covered with mother-of-pearl.  Meat - Creamy Gray Oyster-  lies in  the lower part, immersed in  with its natural transparent juice. It is plump, shiny and  damp. It has a sea flavor and smell.

What to look for when buying oysters?

When buying fresh oysters, make sure they are really fresh, i.e. alive. If the mollusk's shell is open, it may be dead. In the case of ajar shells  tap  in its top - if it closes, it means that the crustacean is alive. The oyster should also feel heavy in the hand and of course not to smell bad, the mixture of the salty sea and algae smells is natural. We should only buy oysters in a store where we can be sure that they have been stored in the right way, at a low temperature. After bringing home, we keep in  refrigerator and  we eat as soon as possible.  

What do the numbers 5 to 0 mean on oyster packages?

These numbers represent the grammage of the oysters.

The smallest ones have a number  5 i  weight from 30 to 45  g.  The largest z  number 0 -  they weigh more than 151 g (e.g. a package of 15 kg contains 108  oysters # 1, but as many as 360 # 5!).

As  to open an oyster?

Specials are often used to open oysters  gloves and knife with  a short, hard blade (shucker). If you don't have one, use a cloth  folded over several times. Take the oyster through this cloth (this will prevent the shell from injuring your hand) with the flat side up.   Drive in between the narrower parts of the shell  knife and pry  cover. How to serve oysters?

Under the influence of acidic liquid crustacean  shrinks slightly - you can see it when you look at the rim of the oyster  touches the shell.   If it does, it means that  is fresh. Otherwise, you'd better not eat. We can also sprinkle them lightly with pepper and chopped shallots, and serve with bread and butter.

Are oysters safe to eat?

Raw oysters can carry potentially harmful bacteria and viruses.  For this reason, to reduce the risk of dangerous infections,  health organizations recommend cooking them before eating.
