Norah Jones pays tribute to Chris Cornell with bluesy 'Black Hole Sun' cover

Norah Jones paid tribute to Chris Cornell, who died by suicide May 17 at age 52, during a Tuesday night show at Detroit’s Fox Theatre — the same venue where the Soundgarden frontman played what would be his final show the night of his death.

Jones sat down at the piano during her concert to cover Soundgarden’s “Black Hole Sun” off their 1994 LP Superunknown.

“I had misheard a news anchor; I thought he said ‘black hole sun,'” Cornell previously told EW of the song’s title. “He didn’t, but it created this image in my brain and I thought it would be an amazing song title. I didn’t think of it tempo-wise or lyrically as a hit.”

But it was a hit: The track is perhaps Soundgarden’s best-known to this day, peaked at No. 9 on the Top 40, and spent seven weeks at No. 1 on Billboard‘s Mainstream Rock chart.
