Emanuel Pogatetz new coach of the Young Violets

Austria Wien has appointed Emanuel Pogatetz as the new coach of the Young Violets. The 40-year-old takes over from Max Uhlig, who is moving to SV Stripfing. Philipp Steiner, who Pogatetz knows from his time at SKN St. Pölten, will be his assistant coach.

The 61-time Austrian international was coach of St. Pölten together with Stephan Helm until October 2023. In the 2020/21 season, Pogatetz worked as an assistant coach at LASK under Dominik Thalhammer and took his first steps as a coach at the Upper Austrian Academy and with Juniors OÖ.

As a player, the centre-back made a name for himself not only in Austria but also in England and Germany, making the most appearances - 158 in total - for Middlesbrough FC, 110 of them in the Premier League. In Germany, Pogatetz played for Hannover 96, Union Berlin and VfL Wolfsburg, among others.

Philipp Steiner, also a centre-back as an active player, played for SV Mattersburg in the domestic Bundesliga, among others, while also working as a youth coach. In the summer of 2022, he took over as head coach at St. Pölten Juniors and most recently also served as interim assistant coach to Jan Schlaudraff at SKN.

Emanuel Pogatetz: "The quintessence of my playing idea is intensity. Austria Wien is therefore the perfect environment for me and with the Young Violets I have a team that is also capable of implementing this style of play. It will be my first stop as sole head coach and a very important step in my development as a coach."

Sporting Director Manuel Ortlechner: "We are delighted to have found a highly motivated, up-and-coming coach for the Young Violets in Emanuel Pogatetz. He has already gained a lot of experience in recent years, but is now set to take the next step in his development as our head coach. His qualities as a player with over 200 games in the Premier League and the German Bundesliga are undisputed anyway. With him, we want to continue on our chosen path with the very young talents and continue to consistently implement our playing idea."
