BELLEVILLE, Ill. – Three Belleville firefighters were taken to the hospital Tuesday morning after their fire truck was involved in a crash and flipped onto its side.

It all happened at Route 161 and Carlyle Avenue, right by Belleville East High School. The good news is that nobody was seriously hurt. The bad news is that there is significant damage to both the fire truck and the Toyota 4Runner, which was also involved in the crash.

This all took place around 6:00 a.m. The Deputy Chief of the Belleville Fire Department, Curt Lougeay, told FOX 2 that his truck was east on Carlyle with its lights and sirens, heading to a fire at a nearby Burger King. Lougeay says the 4Runner was at the intersection with 161 and Carlyle and somehow the crash happened from there.

The three firefighters on the truck all went to the hospital for observation; two were able to get out on their own and one needed some help. The driver of the 4Runner refused medical treatment.

The exact cause of the crash is still under investigation. The Illinois State Police are taking the lead in the crash investigation.

FOX 2 will update this story with more information as it becomes available.
