Nick Knight’s
photographs are taken in a studio. This is because he likes to have natural
backgrounds so the focus is on the models. I believe Knight’s choice of having
a serious mood in each photograph is to make viewers think of a deeper meaning
of the photograph. In both of these pictures I think that knight was trying to
achieve a thoughtful mood. In each picture there is at least one colour that is
dominated in the photographs. In the top picture the man’s red eyes stands out.
This may convey a dark and evil side to him. The dominate colour in the second
picture is blue. This relates to water that is washing out her white pure
dress. The paint leaking at the bottom makes the photograph more effective,
this has been done after the photograph had been taken. These shows there have
been manipulations in the artwork. Whereas the first photograph has been used
before. This is because the Nick Knight has used make-up to show deeper meaning
to the photograph, this shows realistic
depiction. The tone of both of the photographs is a very light tone.
There is high contrast. This is because it makes the photograph more engaging
and stands out. The photographs are in colour to make them more attention
grabbing and interesting. The textures of both photographs are very smooth. At
the bottom of the last photograph shown there isa tough texture showing that there is not
only happiness in the photograph, but there
is also darkness. In the first picture the man has braids on his head. In my
opinion they look like a Bearskin hat. This is because of how it is positioned
on his head. In the studio there looks like there is a lot of light source.
This is because both photos have high key lighting. In both photos digital
cameras has been used. Moreover, by using Photoshop Knight has made the
photographs bolder and brighter to focus on pacific points of the photos. Parts
such as the blue ink and red eyes make the photograph eye catching and the
focal point. The mood is shown very clearly by looking at the facial expression
of the model and how they are positioned.
The red eyes are the focal point of the photographer. This
is because it is bold and stands out. The other colours in the photograph are
natural colours while the red is a brighter colour. This colour denotes evil
and danger. The background and paint on the model is natural so the viewer’s
look at the eyes before anything else. The braid is extra detail so the
photograph is not seen as plain. It adds more pattern and style to the picture.
The genre of this photograph is seen as fashion. This is because of the dress
and the model ‘Naomi Campbell’.
Putting the pure white dress on a black model makes the
dress stand out more. The detail on the dress is straight lines matching the
paint the blue paint and plastic was added by scanning the photograph then
adding these materials on the photograph as an affect.
Nick Knight
was in born 1958 is a British fashion photographer, documentary photographer,
and web publisher and also a director of SHOWstudio.com.
Nick Knight
manipulates his images by filtering and editing them within Photoshop. He uses
accurate amounts of brushes to give the picture that stand-out effect, for
instance he uses a grayscale filter for the primary colour of the woman’s skin;
it is significant to note that Nick uses a Photoshop technique called colour dodge
to achieve a colour texture that has darker feel. I understand how he uses high
contrast to create the feel of intensity and ultimately tell a story about why
the photo was taken. Nick Knight focuses on making mainly the skin look smooth
with dark highlights along the edges. Visually, the image looks perfectly
smooth with no rough parts. Within the image there is a clear focal point, the
face is highlighted for specific reason and also the composition of the image
is quite asymmetrical. If you look closer you shall see floral patterns on the
dress for an alternate effect; and lastly she uses cool colours (such as blue,
green and purple) to retain his particular style. Within the picture
the woman bares a bright and vibrant space-like filter when highlighting the
clothing, the pattern on the clothing gives me the impression that the picture
was revolving around Japanese culture taking into account that her ethnicity is
Asian and that she has sakura flowers blooming out of her fore head. The
composition of the photo is beautiful; Nick accurately conveyed how you should
see beneath a person before you can judge them by manipulating a scar into her
forehead.
