Physical DescriptionMetal belt buckle with "Gott Mit Uns" (God with Us) inscribed on surface with eagle and Nazi swastika in center. Part of leather belt attached.
Historical NoteDuring World War II, Ernest Hemingway was attached to the 22nd Infantry Regiment of the U.S. Army's 4th Infantry Division in Europe while working as a war correspondent for Collier's magazine. This German belt buckle was probably acquired by the writer during that time. Many U.S. soldiers brought home Nazi items as war souvenirs.
