After seeing an original Peel P.50 on a boyhood trip to the Beaulieu Motor Museum in Hampshire, UK, Alex Orchin got fixated on owning a P.50. But his dreams were quickly dashed when he discovered that originals go for over £100,000. Four years ago, he got his chance when a P50CARS P.50 came up for grabs. Since then, he’s used it regularly for his daily commute around his village in East Sussex, UK.

In November 2022, Alex, then 31, decided to embark on an ambitious challenge. He drove the World’s Smallest Car on Britain’s Biggest Journey, a feat never attempted. He embarked on a 1,500-mile trip from John’O Groats, at the top of Scotland, to Lands End in Cornwall, Southern England. Alex journeyed to raise money for the BBC’s Children in Need charity. You can watch his trip on his YouTube channel.

“I’ve never seen the Top Gear team so enthusiastic about any car!”

Jeremy Clarkson

Former presenter on the BBC2 motoring show, Top Gear

Narrower than a phone box & shorter than a Vespa, the P50 microcar is officially the World’s Smallest Car. Made on the Isle of Man in the early 1960s, fewer than 30 exist today making it one of the rarest cars in the World.

Famously TV presenter Jeremy Clarkson drove a 1963 P50 through the BBC right up to his desk.  It’s fame & rarity means cars often sell for over $170,000! Putting them out of reach of most car fans.  Until now!

History of the P50

“One of the Marvels of Sixties Miniaturisation”

James Martin

Celebrity Chef & Car Guy

In 1962 from the quiet seaside town of Peel on the Isle of Man came an invasion.  Strange shapes started to appear the likes of which had never been seen before. Looking like visitors from Mars Trident microcars were spawned by a Peel boat building company.  They were experts in moulding fibreglass and decided to produce an ultralight ultra compact vehicle, a true bubble car!  The Trident with it’s distinctive plexiglass dome was the brainchild of Peel Engineering’s owner, Cyril Cannell.

“The idea was simply to build a car that was able to take another person, as long as the two people weren’t too large.”

“With a lift up top you could get out without interfering with passing traffic and also for parking in between two other vehicles without having to open doors”

The two-seater Trident was the deluxe model. Cyrill had previously created an even smaller, simpler car. In fact the smallest ever road-going vehicle.  At just under 4 and a half feet long the P50 could be tucked into the tiniest of parking spaces. The P50 was the first car to be produced on the Isle of Man and although a success on the mainland it received a mix reaction on the island.  Less than 50 original P50s were ever made, and around 80 Tridents, production ceased in 1966 with Peel Engineering closing in 1974.
