Description
Pear rust is a disease that affects pear and juniper trees, caused by the fungus Gymnosporangium sabinae. Common in Europe, it has spread to North America in the past few decades. The leaves of infected pear trees develop rust-colored spots and spores accumulate in protruding growths. These spores then spread through the wind to junipers, where the fungus completes its life cycle in jelly-like masses.
Habitat
This parasitic mushroom can be found on Juniper species during the winter, while its summer hosts are strictly the species of the Prunus genus (pear). On Pear leaves, the pear rust is visible on the upper sides of the pear's leaves, in the form of orange circles and markings, while on Juniper it forms a gelatinous mass.
