Wojciech Lazarczyk is a painter whom I met at ART/OMI, a month long summer residency I attended for international artists in upstate New York. I found Mr. Lazarczyk to be an inspirational factor for me during my stay at ART/OMI. His dedication and love for painting was truly uplifting. It had been a long time since I felt the way I did then about painting. For me, the importance of our long hours of conversation and work in the large ART/OMI Barn studios resided in our mutual understanding of our connection to painting, and how we are both trying to personalize it with respect to our individual cultural legacies.

The following text is excerpted from a catalogue essay for an exhibition Wojciech Lazarczyk had at Kronika Gallery in Bytom, Poland, 1996:

'The Voiceless Whisper of an Abstract Painting'
by Tomasz Szczuka

Monochromatic canvases refer to the plane, which is the subject of the painting. Once riveted to the plane the look begins to distinguish difficult to perceive forms. Its characteristic vibration allows one to follow the narration within the painting, whose only aim is tautological confirmation of the identity of the canvas's plane. The voiceless whisper of Wojtek Lazarczyk's paintings can exist only in this seemingly absurd space, which can determine its nature only in confrontation with the plane.
