Welcome to Puerto Viejo de Limon, Costa Rica. By far one of the most unique towns in all of Costa Rica. Puerto Viejo offers a richness of culture and diversity that can only be found here in the southern Caribbean. This region is one of the most diverse parts of the country with a large population of Indigenous people, mostly Bribri and Cabeca, as well as a large population of Afro-decent people that bring a strong cultural influence to the region. Some of the first families of Afro-Caribbean decent created a fishing village and settled near Cahuita Point, just 20 minutes north of Puerto Viejo. Cahuita is the home of Calypso music and it is here in Caribe Sur where you can find food that you will not find anywhere else in the country like Caribbean Chicken, Patty, Rice & Beans, and more Afro-Caribbean influenced cuisine. Every year, we celebrate the Day of the Person of African Decent and Culture with the annual Wolaba Parade, an incredible experience for everyone. There is also a large population of international immigrants who have come from all around the world and made Puerto Viejo their home, making this town a real cultural melting pot.
