Ptilidium ciliare

English name: Ciliated fringewort

A distinctive leafy liverwort that forms reddish brown or yellow-green loose tufts. The stems are pinnate or bi-pinnate, with short, rounded branches that are densely covered with overlapping leaves. The leaf margins have long, thin teeth.

In Scotland, Ptilidium ciliare has a mainly upland distribution and is often found among other bryophytes in acidic grassland, sand dunes, heathy woodland and moorland, and on rocky slopes, cliff edges and screes. BBS distribution map
