Rhytidiadelphus triquetrus

English name: Big shaggy-moss

A pleurocarpous moss that is very large and bushy and has irregularly branched, red stems. The leaves stick out in all directions and give the species a scruffy appearance. The pale leaves are straight with lightly toothed margins. 

Capsules mature in winter.

In Scotland, Rhytidiadelphus triquetrus is widespread in woodland, including native pinewoods, sand dunes and grassy and rocky banks. BBS distribution map

Look out for Hylocomium splendens, Ptilium crista-castrensis and Thuidium tamariscinum nearby.
