We recently completed this Pacific Northwest modern, rustic custom wine cellar garage conversion for a client on Sauvie Island in Portland, Oregon. The industrial-style polished cement floors may have been difficult to incorporate in an in-home cellar, but they were the perfect understated finish to allow the wood elements of this garage conversion to shine. The reclaimed lumber that frames the floor-to-ceiling shelving display and the contrasting, custom, hand-forged steel hardware create a modern, rustic feel that is distinctly Pacific Northwest. Without the constraints of integrating into an existing interior style, custom wine cellar garage conversions can become bold design statements on their own. Our client loved this space so much, he moved his home office to the converted garage, and now the wine wall is an enviable backdrop for online meetings.

Other Storage Spaces: Basement Wine Cellars & Under-the-Stairs Wine Cellars

 
Historic homes can utilize existing cellar space for wine storage, sometimes without additional cooling necessary. We built out this custom wine cave for the Wilcox mansion in Portland when it was sold to new owners in 2018.
 

While not all homes have basements, they are also a natural choice for converting to a custom wine cellar. If you’re not sure about losing your garage space and are also lucky enough to have a basement, it’s easy to turn it into a stylish wine cellar or wine cave with lighting, custom shelves, and racking for a couple hundred bottles to a couple thousand.

Don’t have a basement? The space under your stairs is another under-utilized storage space that can be converted to a stunning custom wine cellar. Although the space underneath is usually awkwardly accessible at best, stairs are usually located in high traffic areas, allowing an under stairs wine cellar to become a dramatic focal point in your home.
