Improvements for Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory
By Joshhhuaaa and 1 collaborators
This guide will show you how to improve your experience in Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory, and optimize it for modern computers.

Ubisoft discontinued Chaos Theory's servers in April 2016. However, the multiplayer is still playable when using virtual LAN applications.

[SP] Skipping Intros
Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory begins with many intros which can be tedious after booting it up everytime, let's skip them.

How To:
From your Steam library, right click Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory, click properties, and enter the command "-nointro" in the Launch Options field.
[SP] Thermal Vision Fix for AMD GPUs
AMD graphics cards might encounter thermal vision issues, such as being unable to see heat or only seeing cold surfaces.

Downloads:
Fix #1: Latest Fix[drive.usercontent.google.com]
Fix #2: Old Fix[drive.usercontent.google.com]

How To:
Download and extract the archive into your game's main directory and merge the folders.

Recommended to try both fixes if the first one doesn't work, only apply one at a time.

Note: The latest fix has the highest percentage of working with newer AMD GPUs.
[SP] Custom Resolutions
The max widescreen resolution this game supports is 1920x1080. If your resolution is lower than that, it still possibly can be unsupported if it's a uncommon resolution or aspect ratio.

How To:
C:\ProgramData\Ubisoft\Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell Chaos Theory
Note: The ProgramData folder is a hidden folder in Windows. Make sure to enable it.

Open SplinterCell3.ini, find the section: [WinDrv.WindowsClient]
And edit the following lines to a resolution you'd like to use:
FullscreenViewportX=640 FullscreenViewportY=480
------------------------------------------------------------------------
There is an alternate option, ThirteenAG's Widescreen Fix, it will auto detect your native resolution, fixes some UI/HUD elements, and adjusts your field of view. Skip the field of view section below if using this fix.

Downloads:
ThirteenAG's Widescreen Fix [github.com]

How To:
Download it, and place all the contents into your System folder.
If you open the scripts folder, there is a .ini that has a few options for you:
[MAIN] ResX = 0 ResY = 0 HudWidescreenMode = 1 // Makes certain hud elements offset to screen edges. WidescreenHudOffset = 100.0 // This is the default offset for 16:9. For lower aspect ratios adjusted automatically, for higher you may change it manually. DisableAltTabFix = 0 // Set 1 to disable Alt+Tab fix ;Game Language ; English = 0 ; French = 1 ; German = 2 ; Hungarian = 3 ; Italian = 4 ; Polish = 5 ; Russian = 6 ; Spanish = 7 GameLanguage = 0 [GRAPHICS] ;Shadow map size, can be: 0 , 2048, 3072, 4096, 5120, 6144, 7168, 8192 ; 0 = 2048 = disable shadow map size changing, use game default (2048) ShadowMapResolution = 0 EnableShadowFiltering = 0 // If 1, shadows will be smoother, but will be broken on multi-monitor screen resolution [MISC] FPSLimit = 1000

Note: ThirteenAG's Widescreen Fix removes the game's 100 FPS cap and defaults to 1000 FPS. However, it is recommended to use 30 or 60 FPS instead, as certain elements such as AI pathing and physics objects may encounter problems at higher frame rates.
[SP] Field of View
How To:
C:\ProgramData\Ubisoft\Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell Chaos Theory
Note: The ProgramData folder is a hidden folder in Windows. Make sure to enable it.

Open SplinterCell3User.ini, find the section: [Engine.PlayerController]
And edit the following lines to match your aspect ratio:
DesiredFOV=75 DefaultFOV=75

Do not edit your field of view if using ThirteenAG's Widescreen Fix.
Both players must use the same field of view when joining a coop session.

[SP] EAX Restoration
EAX enhances the game's audio using hardware acceleration to process advanced 3D environments. Since Windows Vista, Microsoft has stripped out the DirectSound3D API, preventing EAX from functioning.

Using the archive below, EAX can be restored to its original state using software to emulate it.

Downloads:
EAX Restoration[drive.usercontent.google.com]

How To:
Download and extract the archive into your game's main directory and merge the folders. Once extracted, run the "eax_restore" registration entries in the System folder. Click Yes on the registry prompt to register DirectSound into your Windows.
[SP] Controller Support
You may have noticed when trying to use a controller on Chaos Theory, the triggers will not work on Xbox controllers. XInput was introduced in December 2005 alongside the launch of the Xbox 360, so it wasn't properly supported in this game.

Downloads:

Original Post for the Xinput Trigger Fix

How To:
Download and extract the archive into your game's main directory and merge the folders.
Connect your controller prior to starting up the game. Make sure "Use Joystick" is enabled and the current joystick is labeled "Xbox Controller #1."

[SP] AI Enhanced Videos
We have enhanced the Bink (*.bik) video files from the Videos folder from the base resolution of 640x360/640x480 to 1920x1080 using Topaz Video AI to enhance them. The videos that are in 4:3 aspect ratio have not been stretched but have black bars displayed.

The archive includes a modified game executable that removes the 640x480 video restriction when playing Bink videos and increases it to 3840x2160. Using the original game executable with videos higher than 640x480 will crash your game.

Enhanced SCCT Versus is a major patch I have created to fix bugs and exploits while improving gameplay and map balance.

Enhanced SCCT Versus Patch Notes[github.com]

How To:
After downloading the game, extract the contents, and you should have a Versus folder. You can place it anywhere you like, it's portable.

Run the game executable, "SCCT_Versus.exe" in the System folder to begin playing.
[VS] Dynamic Lighting Fix
This will fix the issue where dynamic lights aren't displayed properly on modern graphic cards. The mercenary's flashlight is consider a dynamic light, and this will fix the flashlight, but also all the dynamic lights throughout the maps, such as spotlights.

If you have been using 3D Analyze to run this game, dgVoodoo2 offers higher quality shadows and is the recommended utility for most people to use.

Downloads:
dgVoodoo v2.82.5[github.com]

How To:
After extracting the dgVoodoo2 archive, place dgVoodooCpl.exe, dgVoodoo.conf and D3D8.dll (located in MS\x86 folder) into your ..\Versus\System\ directory. We will run the dgVoodooCpl.exe application now to configure it. Make sure the Config folder / Running instance is set to the ..\Versus\System\ directory.

Go to the DirectX tab, and configure the following:
Videocard: GeForce4 Ti 4800
VRAM: 256 MB
Optionally, enable Fast video memory access for a performance improvement in the Unreal Level Editor (UnrealEd) included in the game.

After applying the configuration and closing, you can simply just run SCCT_Versus.exe from now on and the fix will be applied. Anti-aliasing is known to cause artifacts in the game, do not force it on with dgVoodoo2.

How To:
Start 3D Analyze or SvM Graphics Tuner, click on "select," navigate to Versus\System\SCCT_Versus.exe.

Enable Gun Metal Demo fix within the Game/Demo Fixes category to fix dynamic lighting.

3D Analyze

SvM Graphics Tuner

You can use either 3D Analyze or SvM Graphics Tuner, it is the same program except SvM Graphics Tuner is a mini interface version designed for Chaos Theory Versus.
[VS] Custom Resolutions
If playing on Enhanced SCCT Versus, additional screen resolutions are supported including the option to use Native Resolution in the menus.

Chaos Theory Versus only has a handful of resolutions, that aren't really used anymore. If you would like to use the native resolution of your monitor or any custom resolution, here is how to do so.

Make sure to start your game up atleast once, and create a profile. This will create a config file that we are about to edit.

How To:
C:\ProgramData\Ubisoft\Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell Chaos Theory\Saved Games\Versus
Note: The ProgramData folder is a hidden folder in Windows. Make sure to enable it.

Open <USERNAME>_prf.ini, and change ScreenRes to -1.
ScreenRes=-1

Next, go to your game's directory > Versus > System
Open Default.ini, find the section: [WinDrv.WindowsClient]
and edit these lines to the resolution you want:
FullscreenViewportX=640 FullscreenViewportY=480
[VS] Frame Rate Editor
If playing on Enhanced SCCT Versus, use the Frame Rate Editor that is included in the download.

Downloads:
SCCT Frame Rate Editor[drive.usercontent.google.com]

How To:
Simply start the program, set the frame rate you wish, and open the game. The window will close and hook into your game when it starts with the frame rate you entered.

The versus mode for Chaos Theory, by default, is locked at 30 frames per second.
When hosting a game session: it is highly recommended to play at 30 frames per second. Playing above 30 frames per second will cause major issues for the clients.
When joining a game session: you can play at any frames per second you wish.

You can edit your frame rate again without closing the game by tabbing out and running the tool again.

Warning:
When playing above 30 frames per second, minor issues can still occur such as coop moves getting out of sync, the sniper scope wobbles more, and more negative mouse acceleration. This game was completely designed all animations to be ran at 30 frames per second.

[VS] Downloadable Maps
If playing on Enhanced SCCT Versus, do not install this map pack. It will cause compatibility issues.

Downloads:
Joshhhuaaa's Map Pack (79 MB)[drive.usercontent.google.com]

How To:
Unzip the file, drag and drop "Packages" and "System" and overwrite all existing files into your Versus folder.

Most map packs include rushed, unfinish maps you will never play, so this keeps it very simple with the most played and quality maps.

Mouse Polling Rate
Currently, many mice come with polling rates that can reach 1000 Hz or higher. However, in Chaos Theory, higher polling rates may cause issues with your mouse aim. If your mouse allows it, try setting the polling rate to 125 Hz through software. This issue also applies to all games in the series, from the original Splinter Cell to Splinter Cell: Blacklist. It is possibly related to the use of the Unreal Engine 2.

Steam Overlay
There are a handful of games flagged on Steam to disable the overlay because of known conflicts causing the games to crash. Chaos Theory is one of those games flagged to have its overlay permanently disabled. Ironically, the Steam overlay causes nearly no issues with this game and can be toggled back on with an easy command script.

How To:
Extract the archive and run the "EnableOverlay" command script after opening the game.

Thank you for the fantastic guide ^^

The in-game Mouse Sensitivity value also affects controllers when a weapon or gadget is drawn or when using EEV/sniper mode.

There seems to be a default value for the third person camera that cannot be adjusted within the game. I will need to see if there's a way to change it, but at the moment not sure if it is possible.

I'm wondering how to raise the sensitivity on my analog sticks, is there a way?
Nightdoom98 Feb 15 @ 7:09pm
alright, ty.
Joshhhuaaa  [author] Feb 15 @ 7:08pm
Yeah everything should work, no differences with game version minus DRM.
Nightdoom98 Feb 15 @ 7:03pm
I know this might be a stupid question, but will all of this apply to the Ubisoft connect version? got this when it was free awhile back and wanted to try fixes
Joshhhuaaa  [author] Feb 12 @ 8:01pm
ThirteenAG would have to do this, the creator of the Splinter Cell widescreen fixes. He never bothered doing offsets for the Coop-specific HUD an only finished the single player HUD. Enhanced "widescreen" is for Versus mode only, it is not for single player / coop.

Anyone know how to fix offset/broken "Door Interact UI" in COOP? Affects the Text/Selection buttons in UI. Buddy and I both had this while using WS fix and Enhanced mods.
Joshhhuaaa  [author] Jan 17 @ 10:44pm
It is pretty bad naturally but lower your mouse polling rate to 125. Don't use too high of a in-game sensitivity, stick to 10 or lower. If that's too slow, raise your mouse DPI instead of in-game. If you think it still feels bad after that, we can't really do anything about it, the game just has bad mouse input.
CaptainVictory Jan 17 @ 6:00pm
Any tips on fixing the jittery aim with mouse in the Enhanced SvM? I've tried a few things but can't seem to fix it. Is it possible or is that just how it is?
