This is a sub-page of Dragon Quest VIII: Journey of the Cursed King (PlayStation 2).

Access

The following unused maps can be accessed with the GameShark/CodeBreaker codes for the NTSC-U version of the game provided below, which allow you to spawn in the map of your choice after you save and reload.

With the code above enabled, press one of the button combinations below, then save your game:

  • L3 + Square: Unused Old Waterfall Cave L3.
  • L3 + X: Unused Old Waterfall Cave L2.
  • L3 + D-Pad Up: Unused Seer's Retreat.
  • L3 + D-Pad Down: Unused Opening Woods.

The next time you load that saved game, you will appear in the map you've chosen.

List

Seer's Retreat Variant

This map is not connected to the world map and has no exits. You cannot talk to any of the monsters inside the house and the Seer is sleeping in his bed. Going outside again will load the world map, however you will be placed in the middle of nowhere.

When exiting the house, you will appear in the middle of nowhere on the world map.
You will see a random butterfly in place of the exit.

Waterfall Cave Level 3 Variant

Hmmm...

This unused map variant has invisible doors on all exits near the stairs, whereas the used version has no doors. Trying to exit the map may throw you into a loop, not allowing you to exit properly. The unused version also has an empty treasure chest near the waterfall.

The unused variation has a sign in the center, alternate rock and grass placements, and different torch layouts. According to the compass, the map is reversed.

There's also an empty chest near the waterfall.
You can open this chest continuously, but nothing happens.

Waterfall Cave Level 2 Variant

This map is a blank version of the opening map. This map contains nothing of interest. There is no longer any map ID that makes this easily accessible anymore.

This is mostly the same as the above map, however it contains unused light rays that would shine through the trees.
There are no textures in this map and the camera is further away from the player.

Japanese Exclusive Maps

Present only on the Japanese version of the game are even more unused maps.

e01e01

The final version of this map is a pre-rendered movie file.
The game doesn't use this in-engine map.
The second version of the map in the video shows the
final (pre-rendered) version of the map.

z02

A large render of the overworld map, likely a test flying map.
Several islands, and the water aren't fully textured in.

z04

An unused version of Wisher's Peak.

z05

An unused test map featuring a ship.

z05a

The same map as above, but without collision.

z06

A work in progress version of Rydon's Tower.
This map features several test objects as well.

z07

An unused version of Isle of Neos.

z08

A portion of an unused overworld map.
The water textures are filled with a unused test texture.
There is also two test spheres in the middle of the map.

z09

A blank map with three types of trees.
This map also has collision until a certain range.

z10

A small portion of a hill.

z11

A test map likely based on the Argonia or the Baccarat regions.

z12

A test map likely based on the Pickham region.
This map also has wonky collision ranges.
It also has a lighting file (.lgt) that no other map uses in the game.

z13

A test map likely based on the Ascantha region.

z14

An unused dark citadel map.

z16

An unused version of Rydon's Tower entrance.
The entrance is locked that contains a treasure chest in it.
This has a normal entry to the tower.
Exiting to the field softlocks the game.

wm

An unused version of the overworld map while on your ship.
The battle encounter map is also unused here.
This map features very work-in-progress textures and scenery.

wm2

This is the same as the above map, however this does not have enemy encounters.
