Bottom Line

Red Alert 3 isn't much of a departure from previous Red Alert titles, but if you're fine with that, you'll have a lot of fun with it.
  • Pros

    • Fun game play.
    • Innovative online options.
    • Cinematic cutscenes with hilariously cheesy acting.
  • Cons

    • Online play is buggy at times.
    • Not a huge change from previous versions.

The venerable strategy-game franchise Command and Conquer hasn't changed much over the years. The weapons have evolved, the cutscenes are more cinematic (and now feature actors you've heard of), and the graphics are much better. But the playing style—send those troops there, build these vehicles here, don't run out of funds!—is essentially unchanged. If you're fine with that (as I am), you'll love Red Alert 3, which lets you play as the U.S., Japan, or Russia, and integrates online play into the regular campaigns. Play offline and you're paired with an AI ally to fight alongside, but go online and you'll be matched up with a partner. C&C's online community isn't the most reliable, but when it works, Red Alert 3 is a lot of fun.
