COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – Tennessee swimming legend David Edgar was named to the CSCAA's 100 Greatest Men's Swimmers & Divers of the Past Century list, the organization announced Tuesday.

Nicknamed the "Fastest Man Afloat" by Sports Illustrated, Edgar was a seven-time NCAA champion during his time with the Tennessee Volunteers, sweeping the 50 and 100 freestyles in 1970, '71 and '72 to solidify his incredible career. He was also a member of the championship-winning 400 free relay team during 1972.

One of the best freestylers for his generation, the Fort Lauderdale, Florida, native won 11 gold medals during the SEC Championships. He led the Vols to three-straight NCAA Top-10 finishes, including the No. 3 finish in 1972. During that same season, he guided Tennessee to the SEC Title.

On the international stage, Edgar was part of the world-record 400 free relay team that brought home gold for Team USA at the 1972 Munich Olympic Games. He also won a gold medal during the 1971 Pan American Games.

A member of the International Swimming Hall of Fame, Edgar was the first man to swim the 100-yard freestyle in less than 45 seconds. While on Rocky Top, he learned the Tennessee Freestyle Turn, which soon became one of the most copied flip turns in the sport, from head coach Ray Bussard. By the end of his career, Edgar set two world records, won a pair of gold medals during international competition and was a seven-time NCAA champion.

Selections for the 100 Greatest Men's Swimmers & Divers list were made as a part of the CSCAA's 100th year. Nearly three thousand athletes were nominated, with a panel of current and former college swimmers, coaches and members of the media making selections from a list of 973 finalists. Eighty-six swimmers and 14 divers were selected.

Founded in 1922, the College Swimming and Diving Coaches Association of America (CSCAA), is the nation's first organization of college coaches. The mission of the CSCAA is to advance the sport of swimming and diving with coaches at the epicenter of leadership, advocacy, and professional development.
