Resumen: El candombe uruguayo, el arte de los afrodescendientes del país oriental, se desarrolló entorno a las tradiciones religiosas de sus antepasados africanos. En el transcurso de la historia se iba convirtiendo en la manifestación de la identidad de este colectivo. El objetivo del presente artículo es demostrar cómo en diferentes momentos de la historia social y política del Uruguay este fenómeno artístico adquiría otro significado que el original. Nos centraremos en dos momentos históricos en los que las llamadas de los tambores de candombe denotaban y transmitían mensajes diferentes de su originario sentido religioso.

Abstract: This article refers to the Uruguayan candombe - musical genre of African descent that evolved in relation with religious traditions of their African ancestors. Being a manifestation of the identity of this group, at different times of social and political history of Uruguay, candombe took on another meaning. In the article I will focus on the beginning of this artistic expression and two historical moments in which the calls of candombe drums, during the public presentations, denoted and conveyed different messages from its original religious meaning.
