– when the interior space is very dark while the light is shooting from the cross holes on the fair-faced concrete wall, visitors inside the church will feel the holy and impressive atmosphere by this enormous contrast of light and shade.

8. Description

Category: SPACE

The church of light is a masterpiece designed by Tadao Ando in 1989. Located in the suburbs of Osaka, this small church transfers a holy atmosphere to every visitor. Replacing the real cross placed in other churches, a light cross is created by a large cross hole on a side of the fair-faced concrete wall. Moreover, the staircase in the church is downward so the standing place of priests is a little bit lower than that of prayers. This kind of arranging make prayers feel equal with priest and closer to the god. The nature element—light in this narrow and dark space give visitors a spirit of light and hope.
