Winning a regional championship in Reichenbach (Saxony/Germany) on Sunday (3) Peter Sack produced a lifetime best in the Shot Put of 20.92 metres. The 27-year-old had a fine series of 19.52 – 20.71 – 19.82 – 20.52 – 20.92 – x, beating the German qualifying standard for the World Championships in Osaka, Japan, (20.30m) three times.

There were more fine throws in Zeulenroda on the same day, when Robert Harting took the men’s Discus Throw with 64.54, beating Michael Möllenbeck (63.83) into second. Franka Dietzsch continued her unbeaten series with 65.02m for the women’s event win.

Lobinger - 5.81m

In the Pole Vault, Tim Lobinger cleared 5.81m at a meeting in Cologne on Sunday. Björn Otto and Lars Börgeling took second and third places with 5.71m each, clearing the national mark for Osaka of 5.70m as well. On the same day in Saulheim Carolin Hingst took the women’s pole vault with 4.55m, while Julia Hütter was second with 4.45m. Again both athletes beat the German qualifying standard for Osaka.

Another fine mark by a German athlete came in Dommelhof, Neerpelt, Belgium on Saturday (2), when André Pollmächer clocked 27:55.66 minutes in a 10,000 m race. That means that at present it would be Pollmächer and not the European Champion Jan Fitschen who would represent Germany in Osaka. Pollmächer had already won the European Cup 10,000 m earlier this season.

Kigen beats Jawher in Neuss 10k race

Moses Kigen showed his ability at the 10k distance, when he won a road race in Neuss. The Kenyan beat his former fellow countryman Mushir Salem Jawher, who comeptes for Bahrain since March 2006, by one second. Kigen clocked 28:50 minutes. Third placed John Rogat (Tanzania/29:17) was well behind.

The women’s 5km race in Neuss was won by Ethiopia’s Ashu Kasim Rabu. She ran 15:42 minutes, finishing three seconds ahead of Irina Mikitenko.
