Power outage has been reported in Skagerrak 1 & 2, caused by a failure in Kristiansand substation. The failure occurred on 16 June 2021, causing both the cables to shut down, and reducing the total Skagerrak cables capacity to 1160 MW. Skagerrak 2 came back to operations after 2 days; however, Skagerrak 1 will remain inoperational for an unknown period of time. The cause of substation failure also remains unknown.

The electricity grids of Norway and Denmark are connected through four HVDC Skagerrak cables, sharing 1700 MW electricity altogether, of which 500 MW is carried by
Skagerrak 1 & 2. The 127 km long Skagerrak 1 & 2 were commissioned in 1977. The 250 kV submarine cables were manufactured and installed by Nexans.

Previously, the
Skagerrak 1&2 and 4 were taken out of operation in June 2020, due to faults in submarine and land cables respectively, reducing the total capacity to 380 MW. NKT was contracted by Statnett to repair Skagerrak 1&2. The links came back to operation in mid-October 2020.
