Product Description

The relentless spread of urbanization and its associated light pollution have become a growing problem for all amateurs and astro photographers. The current solutions to the problem can be expensive and might include the purchase of a monochrome camera, several types of narrowband filters and a filter wheel. L-eNhance provides an economical and practical solution for amateurs. It is a dual band-pass narrowband filter which has been designed for DSLR (digital SLR), color CMOS and CCD Astrophotography Cameras. The convenience and cost effectiveness of this filter allows amateurs to image a rich selection of astronomical images, even in bright, heavily light-polluted areas. Optolong believes the design of our L-eNhance filter is a technical innovation among filters. It effectively isolates the H-Alpha, H-Beta, and Oxygen III nebula emission lines and achieves a maximum transmission of up to 90%. The performance of this filter delivers images that superbly control the impact from light polluted skies. According to the characteristics of celestial body emission lines and the light pollution spectrum, Optolong specially designed and optimized dual-band L-eNhance filter in order to retain the prominent color of nebula RGB while blocking out most of light pollution. The Optolong L-eNhance filters have threads on one side - they can be used with filter wheels, filter drawers, focusers with a place to thread focal reducers internally (such as some Moonlite focusers) and camera nose pieces that fit into compression rings but the filter should not be threaded into the imaging train like an adapter ring with threads on both sides. Substrate: B270 Thickness: 1.85mm Tpeak: T>90% Blocking range: 300-1000nm Blocking depth: Light pollution line blocking >99% Surface quality: 60/40 Transmitted Wavefront RMS: λ/4 Parallelism (arcsec): 30s

Let me start off with the one and only real con I have with this item. My telescope has a built-in filter vault, so I need to essentially partially disassemble the telescope, screw in the filter, and put the telescope back together. Not in itself a problem. However, with the filter installed, it so darkens my view through my camera (since I'm using all this for astrophotography) that the stars are either completely gone or so very, very dim as to be no improvement and since I need to be able to focus the telescope / camera this is something of a big headache. Hopefully I can keep my focus setting locked in place but otherwise I will have to start off without the filter in, set up my focus, then take my telescope off the mount, open it up in the pitch black, install the filter, remount the telescope and pray to the universe above that I haven't nudged anything even a little out of how it was set. Not really the fault of the filter, but I hadn't anticipated it being this darkening to my view.Okay, setting that aside, I took the filter out for a test last night, in a totally light-polluted backyard in suburban Detroit, with a full-moon also in the sky and didn't even really try to set up anything with much effort. I just wanted to see roughly if this filter was worth the price. The result was the attached image of the Orion Nebula. I've photographed it before, but that was under a dark, dark sky far up north, and no moon, and none of those came out as nice as what I took last night under all the worst conditions. I'm a bit in shock that I took this photo. I'm still a pretty beginner amateur at this, and one who has very little money and has had to cobble together some mediocre equipment and still have only had sporadic success in the field, and though I'm sure others can and do take much, much more impressive shots that this one, for me it's a beaut and it was just the first try. So, though I've only barely used this filter I'm pretty impresssed with this result. I can barely wait to take a trek up north and test it out under ideal conditions. So from me, I'd say it is worth the price and it does take things up a few notches for sure.

I've been imaging nebula using the SvBony UHC filter (dual wideband) to suppress bright star fields. The dimmer Sharpless objects require more suppression than the UHC provides, but I was unsure if the L-Enhanced would block too much light for use with a Stock DSLR camera. I am pleased that the L-Enhanced filter, while suppressing most white light, still passes enough light to focus my 100mm refractor with a bahtinov mask. I went from (3min UHC) to (5min L-Enh) to get about the same exposure level. Very pleased with the results and will be using the L-Enhanced on the dimmer emission nebula. The SvBony UHC is still excellent for brighter emission and some reflection nebula. I've attached a sample of SH2-101 Tulip Nebula (RGB level corrected and stretched) for comparison.

I have a less-than-perfect achromatic reflector telescope that tends to have blue halos around stars when imaging dim nebulas. I needed something to cut down the star light while letting the nebula through and this works great. It does force me to have longer exposures, but the overall quality of my images has improved, so it’s worth it.

I’m shooting RGB with a unmodified Nikon D5300, and can still get some Ha spectrum through this. I’m quite happy with the purchase.

Very pleased with this purchase. This filter lets the photographer capture narrow band images using a one shot color camera with ease. With the multiple band widths used, nebulae can be imaged without the time and expense of using a mono-color camera with separate hydrogen and oxygen filters. Nice quality!
