This review is actually on the 2" version, but it isn't listed here. This smaller version should have exactly the same performance.

I haven't seen the Horsehead Nebula since 1997. I have a 1 1/4" Lumicon H-Beta filter and saw it with that filter back in 1997. However, I've tried over and over again to see it since then with no luck.

I got this filter for Christmas and had a chance to try it out on 17 Jan 2009. The first try didn't reveal it, but on the second try, the dark patch was right there! I used the filter in conjunction with an Orion Q-70 26mm eyepiece and nailed it. Though I couldn't quite make out a horse head shape, there was no mistaking what that dark spot was. Three other people saw it through my scope, and for them, it was the first time ever seeing it visually.

The unit is about $150, but worth every penny. Highly recommended.

Have used on 11" SCT from dark skies and also very good 22" DOB. It is OK but frankly I wouldn't spend the money for something that is only good for a couple of objects. On the other hand if you have a camera use that. One of my first objects I photographed with my 11" SCT and an old ST-237 camera was the HH from my backyard just South of San Francisco shooting over the ocean. I was surprised at how easy it was to capture with digital camera. Hard for human eye to see it but piece of cake for a camera.
