Never underestimate the regenerative powers of Metallica. Following the stripped-down Load and Re-Load, they've returned to the raw, vitriolic savagery of their earlier canon, using 1984's Ride the Lightning as a template for St. Anger. The title track provides the psychic lynchpin of the album by combining the bombast and defiance of the band's earliest high-water marks with more deliberate lyrics and emotional nakedness. Equally cathartic is "Some Kind of Monster," a lumbering beast of a song that declares, "This is the voice of silence no more." Despite that claim, there's an economy to these lyrics; James Hetfield's raw-toothed growl only occasionally punctuates the menacing soundscapes. In fact, "Dirty Windows," the standout track here, is a shimmering five-minute instrumental that's free of the baroque trappings that sometimes clutter the Metallica landscape. --Jaan Uhelszki

I first want to say St. Anger is really more a 4 star album but because of the extreme negative reviews, I decided to give it a 5 out of 5. I love this album, I really do and I understand why people despise this album because either they hate that there are no guitar solos or they say Ulrich's drums are horrible or there are probably a lot more reasons but they seem to be the most common reasons why people hate this album. St. Anger is no Master of Puppets or Ride the Lightning of course but I still think it is a great album or at least a very good album but I liked all of Metallica's solo albums. I will do a review of the tracks on St. Anger one by one.
1) Frantic: Released as one of the four singles on this album, This opener is a good opener and tells you right away what the rest of the album is like. While not one of my favorites on St. Anger, I still like this song but I just don't listen to it as much as the other tracks. Still a good song though. 3 out of 5

2) St. Anger: The first single to be released from this album, This also my favorite track on the album. I love the anger on the song especially the chorus. Perfect song to listen to when you are really pissed off. I thought the vocals by Hetfield were pretty good on the song, The drums were decent as well at least to me. 4.5 out of 5

3) Some Kind of Monster: Another song released as a single on the album, This song is also the title of the documentary Metallica released after the album. I like the song but not one of my favorites, I like some of the guitar riffs on the track. The vocals are decent and the drums are sort of a mixed bag for me on this track. 3 out of 5

4) Dirty Window: Very good song that has the catchy lyrics "I'm judge and I'm jury and I'm executioner too". The vocals are pretty good on this track as well as the instruments. This is the first track on the album that was not released as a single. One of my favorites on the album. 4 out of 5

5) Invisible Kid: The instruments are another mixed bag for me on this track but the vocals are pretty decent. I really like the song near the ending when the instruments kind of slow down because the vocals are pretty good during this moment of the track. 3.5 out of 5

6) My World: I like the lyrics on this track and the instruments are decent. The lyrics "Not only do I not know the answer, I don't even know what the question is" reminds me of my struggle with Math in school which I related my anger to. Good song. 3 out of 5

7) Shoot Me Again: Another one of my favorites on the album, I like James' vocals on the track and I like the instruments. It is a pretty catchy track and it is a very good pump up song. 4 out of 5

8) Sweet Amber: Good track which has some of Hetfield's best vocals on the album. The instruments are decent on the track, it is another good track. 3 out of 5

9) The Unnamed Feeling: The 4th out of 4 singles released on the album, This song is probably my second favorite song on the album. You can hear the anger in Hetfield's voice during the song and the instruments are pretty good on the track. 4 out of 5

10) Purify: Easily the worst track on this album at least for me anyway. It is just a really annoying track, Hetfield's vocals are easily his worst on the album and the instruments are also annoying. The lyrics also suck. Skip this track. 2 out of 5

11) All Within My Hands: My third favorite track on the album and a pretty good closer for the album especially after the worst song on the album. I really like Hetfield's vocals on this track and I also like the instruments. This is also the longest track on the album, clocking in at 8:48, This is one out of the three tracks on the album that run over 8 minutes the two others being Some Kind of Monster and Invisible Kid. Really good song. 4 out of 5

Overall: The title is a perfect description of the album, It is a really good album to listen to when you are very angry. While the drums can sometimes be a bit overbearing, The rest of the instruments are pretty good and so are Hetfield's vocals. A very underrated album that gets hate which I can understand but I think people are a bit too harsh on this album.

May not be the best album in the world but I believe it's still some good piece of work

I really love this album and have only listened to it two times through. The first time I heard it I could not believe how heavy and brutal it was. Yes we all miss guitar solo's but that is definitely not a deal breaker for me. Actually, many of the reasons cited on the one star reviews are exactly why I. Love this one. It is very different, the vocals, sound, drums, song writing everything. Incredible! Not even one skippable track on the whole disc. Where I disagree with many is that this is far better than Load or Reload. Those albums are criminally underrated. This is the greatest band in the world. Here is the run down:
1. Kill Em All- perfect score 10 out of 10 and sits on top of the mountain as the greatest thrash metal masterpiece ever created!
2. Ride The Lightning- 9.9 out of 10- song writing and recording quality increasing- with Creeping Death, For Whom The Bell Tolls, and Fade To Black could easily be number one.
3. Master Of Puppets-9.8 out of 10- many fans first choice and no argument from me- incredible masterpiece start to finish
4. And Justice For All- 9.5 out of 10- brutally heavy crushing technical perfection- best songs One, title cut, Harvest of Sorrow, To lIve is To Die
5. Death Magnetic- 9.5 out if 10- production was bad but songs are exceptional, band is ON FIRE here- could rate even higher
6. Load- 9.4 out of 10- shockingly underrated- bad reviews due to new sound but I love this polished blues metal beast. GREAT album!
7. Black Album- 9.4 out of 10- probably the best produced Metallica album- stripped down more accessible songs. I would rate this 10 of 10 when it was released but it has slipped a little over time. Still and all time classic!
8. St. Anger- 9.3 out of 10- one word- relentless! I love it because it is so different from the rest. Bravo to them for stepping out and taking another chance!!! amazing stuff here but most fans will not understand if they have a preconceived notion about exactly how Metallica should sound.
9. Reload- 9.1 out of 10- a few throw away tracks but also master works including Fuel, Memory Remains, and others

In conclusion, St. Anger is a brutal sonic attack. Well done boys!!!! Also, I love the new drum sound, no complaints here!!!!

This album was rejected by the Metallica faithful upon its release. The construction and recording of this album is the subject matter of the film "Some Kind Of Monster". This is a film about a band coming apart at the seams and imploding. Its a dark listen but it is ultimately rewarding. It does grow on you. I now prefer it to the black album but I would not recommend you start your Metallica Journey Here.
