Description

This is an original 18"x24" oil portrait of Charles Chibitty, a noted and last surviving Comanche Code Talker from World War 2. I painted this portrait from a black and white photograph that a friend of mine took of Mr. Chibitty a month before his death while in a nursing home. It was such a sad sight to see of a proud true American Hero and Patriot. When I painted the portrait I wanted to depict the past and the present in the portrait. I tried putting him in a more traditional outfit with a scarf that he was noted to wear when he made appearances around the country. The insignia on his scarf shows that he was a proud Mason and the blued ribbon and medal around his neck was a medal that was presented to him by former Secretary of State Donald Rumsfeld who served under President George W. Bush. The Comanche Indians were very instrumental in helping Allied forces defeat the German Nazi army in WWII. Mr. Chibitty was the last survivor of that group of brave American Indians.

My name is Dale Shipman and I live in Bixby, Oklahoma. I have been highly interested in art since I was a child. I grew up wanting to be an artist and eventually started getting serious about my art in the mid 70's doing pastel portraits for friends and fellow workers. Later I became more interested in painting in oils and took classes from a popular artist in the Tulsa area, David Knick, who taught the style of the old masters and I fell in love with the technique. I loved the style of Rembrandt and other old masters of that era. I also have always been a fan of the early American landscape artists Albert Bierstadt, Thomas Moran, Native American art, wildlife art, portraits and other subject matters. For the most part I am self taught ,studying the styles the masters by observing their techniques and styles. I have spent most of my adult life doing art as a past time while I worked as a designer for various engineering companies in the Tulsa area. Now that I'm retired I am spending my full time to art and music since I have played music all of my life and still enjoy it too. Thank you for visiting my site and hope you come back. God bless!
