The 5 best neighbourhoods in Newcastle

Looking to move to Newcastle? Great choice.

Newcastle is a real mix of Victorian elegance and industrial grit. It started life as a Roman settlement called Pons Aelius around 1,900 years ago and is now a thriving, fiercely independent city with gorgeous harbours, beautiful homes, excellent art galleries and some of the best bars and restaurants in the country.

House prices in Newcastle are slightly cheaper than the UK average, which is great news for anyone wanting to buy here. If you want to buy a terrace house in Newcastle, the average price is £173,998, according to Zoopla. The average cost of a flat is even lower, at £124,637.

But the first thing you’ll need to decide is where in Newcastle you want to move to? From Ouseburn to Quayside, you have plenty of choice - and each of the city’s neighbourhoods offers something slightly different to its residents. Here are some of the neighbourhoods we'd recommend…

Fenham

This pretty residential area is a wonderful place to live in Newcastle upon Tyne. Fenham is located just 2 miles away from the city centre, so residents here will have quick access to city life through good transport links. Whether you are a walker, biker, bus rider or driver, you’ll find yourself at the heart of the city in under 10 minutes. It also just so happens to be the Newcastle neighbourhood where Ant and Dec were brought up…

Quayside

A fantastic all-rounder for anyone looking to move to the area. It has a trendy, upscale vibe – albeit one that still has a hint of an edge, which means it’s popular with young professionals. Quayside sits across the pretty River Tyne, and it’s a really popular place to live. You’ve got a great collection of high-quality bars, restaurants, and clubs in the area, as well as a real independent scene with weekly markets, coffee shops and a roster of ever-changing food trucks. Soak up some culture with a gallery hop - you have the Sage concert venue and the BALTIC Centre for Contemporary Art. The entire area has a really leafy, family-friendly feel. Remember, you can soak up a vista of the whole area from the iconic Millennium Bridge.

Gosforth

Looking for a safe family-friendly neighbourhood? Gosforth is the place for you. Because it’s so popular, it is a bit pricier than other areas of Newcastle – but it’s worth it.
You have a plethora of excellent schools that cater to all ages so families love Gosforth. You also have two cinemas, three golf courses, and the central park in Gosforth too, which is great for morning strolls or leisurely afternoon dog walks.

Gosforth is famed for its peaceful tree-lined streets, with lovely detached homes and a sophisticated air. It’s also only 10 to 15 minutes from the city centre. Oh, and did you know that Alan Shearer was born here? Well, now you do.

Jesmond

Jesmond is possibly one of the most affluent areas in Newcastle. It’s a grand, reputable suburb with a buzzy friendly atmosphere. You’ve got cocktail bars butting up against burger restaurants and quirky bars; moneyed families, young professionals and blue-collar workers sharing leafy pavements. You’ve also got plenty of garden and riverside walks, parks, museums and so much more. Jesmond is really popular with young professionals and families and lovers of nature - you’ve got spaces like Jesmond Dene, one of Jesmond’s greatest outdoor attractions.

Ouseburn

Once an industrial area of Newcastle, Ouseburn has become a great place to live and work. The neighbourhood is peppered with stylish boutiques and eateries, and its music scene is fantastic. It’s home to artists and musicians and is a fantastic place to drink, dance, see a gig or simply mingle with the beautiful crowds. The area is safe (relatively) and you’ll find plenty of beautiful Victorian houses peppering the streets. And no matter which street you stumble upon, it’s hard to go wrong – you’re sure to find something tasty, arty or community-driven creative.
