Professor Corriveau’s research focuses on social and cognitive development in childhood, with a specific focus on how children decide what people and what information are trustworthy.  She is also interested in language and reading development, cross-cultural differences and the role of parenting in children’s social and emotional development.

Ayse Payir

Ayse is working with Kathleen Corriveau and Paul Harris in a project where they investigate children’s conceptualization of science and religion across different cultures. She is interested in children’s understanding of what is possible and what is impossible and how this understanding is reflected in their counterfactual thinking—the thoughts of “what if” or “if only”.

 

 

 

Katie Leech

Postdoctoral Research Associate

Katie Leech is postdoctoral associate in the Social Learning Lab. Previously, Katie was a postdoctoral fellow at the Harvard Graduate School of Education, and received her PhD in Human Development and Quantitative Methodology from the University of Maryland in 2016. She is interested in how children’s language and cognitive skills develop as a product of their social interactions with caregivers.

Niamh Mcloughlin

Postdoctoral Research Associate

Niamh is broadly interested in the impact of social information on young children’s evaluations, learning and behavior. She completed her PhD in Psychology at the University of York, UK, in 2017 which investigated the development of intergroup bias. She is currently working on projects examining parental testimony in the transmission of religious and scientific concepts and the social factors that promote children’s science learning.

 

 

 

Telli Davoodi

Telli works on cross-cultural projects where she collaborates with researchers locally and internationally to study the effects of context and culture on the development of causal reasoning, social essentialism, and moral judgments. At the SLL, she focuses on children’s use of causal reasoning in learning about unobservable scientific and religious phenomena.She is also interested in children’s concept of “ownership” in different cultures and how socioeconomic status influences children’s and adults’ ideas about who deserves what.

Ian Campbell

Ian is a doctoral student in the Applied Human Development Ph.D. program. He is interested in how children decide who to trust, engage in critical thinking, and process important information while learning. Currently, his research focuses on how children view and trust text-based sources of information.

 

 

Kelly Cui

Kelly is a doctoral student in the Human Development Program. She is broadly interested how children learn from and interact with other people, and how parent-child interaction and cultural context influence this process. Currently she is working on a project linking children’s teaching behavior to their selective learning in both US and China.

 

 

Ellie Castine

 Ellie is a doctoral student in Counseling Psychology. Her research interests broadly focus on children’s development of critical thinking skills. More specifically, she is interested in the development of race based judgments. Ellie hopes this study will increase our understanding of the ways in which children learn about race and how we can teach in a way that minimizes the development of racial stereotypes.

Emily Palmer

Emily is a Psychology undergraduate from the University of Bath in England, and will be writing her honors thesis on research conducted during her year at the Social Learning Lab. Her main research interests include the investigation into how children conceptualize both science and religion, and the cross-cultural differences that exist within this understanding. Upon graduation, she hopes to complete a Masters in London in Developmental Psychology.

 

 

 

Jenna Alton

Jenna graduated from St. John’s College, Annapolis, in 2016 with a double major in Philosophy and The History of Math and Science. She is broadly interested in how a child’s social world influences their thinking, learning, and behavior as a child and into adulthood. She hopes to pursue Social Psychology in graduate school.

Fang Eleanor Yan

Eleanor is a full-time research assistant, focusing on how parents’ teaching and testimonies will impact children’s understanding of the surrounding world. Eleanor received her master’s degree in TESOL from Boston University. She is interested in how cross-culturally diversified upbringings will impact children’s language learning.

 

 

 

 

Janhavi Gadam

I am a junior studying Health Science with a minor in Psychology. After graduation, I intend to go to Medical School. I am very interested in the cognitive development of children.

 

Matt Bandel

Matt is a sophomore studying psychology in the college of arts and sciences. He plans to continue onto medical school to study psychology using the experience and knowledge gained at the SLL.

 

 

 

 

 

 Julie Stern

 Julie Stern is a junior studying Psychology and Sociology, with a minor in Deaf studies. After graduating, she intends to continue her education to become a family counselor and psychologist.
        

     

 

 

Youmna Jalkh

Youmna is a Junior majoring in Psychology and following the premedical track. After graduation, she hopes to attend medical school to study either Ophthalmology or Psychiatry. She hopes to apply what she learned about children in the lab to better understand patients’ behaviors, emotions and thoughts.

 

 

 

 

 Angelica Concepcion

Angelica Concepcion is a sophomore studying Behavior and Health in the Sargent College of Health and Rehabilitation Sciences. After graduation Angelica hopes to pursue a doctorate in Occupational Therapy and help improve the lives of others, especially for children with special needs and the elderly who are often marginalized. She has special interests in child development, education, social justice and theology and is very excited to be part of the Social Learning Lab!

 

 

 

Hannah Carroll

My name is Hannah Carroll and I am a junior in Sargent College studying Health Science. I am pursuing a career in global public health and am excited to use my experience at the Social Learning Lab to understand how children might shape their perceptions of health professionals and health volunteers.

 

 

Deniz Kizildag

Deniz is a sophomore studying Psychology and Anthropology. She wants to go into Early Childhood Education for children with special needs after graduating.

 

 

 

 

Julia McMahon 

Julia is an undergraduate senior studying Health Sciences. After graduation, she plans on attending Nursing or PA school. She is interested in better understanding how social and cognitive factors affect patient/provider interactions and outcomes.

Amita is a sophomore currently studying Psychology and Education in hopes to one day work with kids in foster care.

Huaiyu is a junior studying Economics and Psychology. He is specifically interested in cognitive development and learning in children and hopes to pursue a career working for a children’s charity.

 

 

 

 

Andrea Maheras

Andrea is a sophomore studying Psychology and Behavior & Health.  She hopes to continue onto nursing school and become a psychiatric nurse practitioner.  She plans to utilize her understanding of children’s social and cognitive development to aid her in treating patients in the future.
