Battleship USS New Jersey program set Oct. 23
The Lewes Public Library will welcome retired Capt. Walter M. Urban Jr., USNR, for a presentation about the Battleship USS New Jersey at 1 p.m., Saturday, Oct. 23.
Built at the former Philadelphia Naval Shipyard and placed in commission in May 1943, USS New Jersey (BB-62) is the most decorated battleship in the history of the United States Navy. The “Big J” fought in World War II, Korea, Vietnam and the Lebanon crisis. The ship earned nine battle stars and campaign ribbons during its many years of active service. Decommissioned for the last time in February 1991, USS New Jersey would eventually become a world-class memorial and museum in Camden, N.J., welcoming thousands of visitors each year.
Urban’s presentation will bring to life the incredible career and history of the USS New Jersey through film, photos and historical discussion. Seating is limited, and registration is required. To register, go to lewes.lib.de.us or call 302-645-2733.
Urban served as a public affairs officer in the U.S. Navy Reserve. He performed active duty for training onboard USS New Jersey in February 1985 and February 1991. He also served extensively on USS New Jersey’s sister ship USS Wisconsin (BB-64) from 1988-91. In his official capacity, Urban was involved with the media supporting the recommissioning of all four Iowa-class battleships from 1982 to 1988. Since 2001, he has served as military liaison officer and member of the board of trustees onboard USS New Jersey.
