Medicare’s Star Rating for CarePlus Health Plans

The following information shows CarePlus’ overall star rating from the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS).

Star ratings and what they mean. Five stars is excellent. Four stars is above average. Three stars is average. Two stars is below average. One star is poor. Table graphic.

What do star ratings mean for a healthcare plan?

Every year, Medicare rates all Medicare health and prescription drug plans on a scale of 1 to 5 stars to measure how well plans are serving their members. Medicare publishes plans’ star ratings to help people make an informed decision when choosing a Medicare plan. Medicare says that plans with 4 stars or higher are considered above average.

How does a health plan earn its star rating?

Every year, Medicare rates health plans on their performance across a variety of categories that Medicare feels are most important to Medicare beneficiaries. The overall star rating includes ratings for the following categories:

Screenings and Vaccines

Measures how many members participated in preventive care to stay healthy.

Member Experience

Based on members’ satisfaction with their healthcare experience, including the plan’s customer service, benefits, and network of doctors.

Customer Service

Indicates if members were able to connect with a customer service representative and receive answers to their questions.

Chronic Conditions

Measures if members with certain medical conditions received regular check-ups, exams, and treatment for their condition.

Complaint Resolution and Health Plan Performance

Based on the number of issues and whether the plan’s performance improved over time.

Rating Measures for Prescription Drug Plans

Most CarePlus Medicare Advantage plans include Part D prescription drug coverage. In addition to the ratings above for all health plans, Medicare also rates us on the following prescription drug coverage categories and includes these results in our overall star rating. 

Drug Plan Customer Service

Indicates how well the plan handled member calls and questions.

Drug Plan Complaint Resolution and Performance

Based on the number of issues and whether the plan’s performance improved over time.

Drug Plan Member Experience

Measures members’ satisfaction with their overall experience.

Drug Safety and Pricing Accuracy

Indicates how accurate the plan’s pricing information is, and how often members with certain medical conditions are prescribed drugs in a way that is safe and clinically recommended for their condition.
