Spain’s sales chart saw a new leader at the end of 2023, with MG’s new compact crossover, the ZS, claiming the title of the best-selling model on the Iberian Peninsula in December 2023.

MG achieved an impressive sales figure of 2,563 units for the ZS in the final month of the year. This performance propelled it to the top spot, surpassing the Renault Clio and the Dacia Sandero, which were the three best-selling models during that period.

Notably, both the ZS and the Clio experienced increased sales compared to the previous year, with the ZS not being available in December 2022 and the Clio’s sales showing a 57 percent year-over-year improvement. On the other hand, the budget-basement Sandero saw a decline in sales, dropping by 11 percent.

Whereas the Dacia starts at €13,200 (around US$14,200 at current exchange rates) in Spain, the Renault starts at €16,100 (around $17,400), and the MG splits the difference, with an MSRP of €14,690 (around US$15,900 ). The all-electric MG ZS EV starts at €22,480 (around US$24,300 ), but a breakdown of which powertrain was the most popular is not available. Autonews reports overall sales were up 11 percent in December, its 12th straight month of growth.

Ultimately, MG’s strong performance in Spain helped it become the 16th best-selling brand in Europe that same month. That’s up from the 21st largest brand in December 2022, and that growth is being attributed to the popularity of the affordable ZS.

Back to Spain, MG faced tough competition from Peugeot and Volkswagen in terms of manufacturer sales. While MG managed to secure a strong position with its ZS model, Peugeot and VW have a broader range of vehicles in their lineup. Interestingly, Seat, the Spanish brand within the Volkswagen Group, did not have any vehicles in the top 10 of the local sales chart, highlighting the competitive landscape of the market.

December 2023 was also a big month for Toyota in Spain. Its sales increased by 17 percent thanks to a 71 percent increase in demand for the Corolla, and a strong end of the year for the Yaris Cross.

Industry-wide, sales of hybrids rose by 24 percent in the country in the final month of the year. Plug-in hybrids grew even more, by 41 percent, while sales of fully electric models jumped by an impressive 71 percent.
