Hierochloe odorata

Sweet Grass, Vanilla Grass, Holy Grass

Hierochloe odorata
Price: £2.95
Perfect for cutting
This beautiful and quite ethereal grass is characterised by its eponymous sweet scent. Found by riversides, pond and lake margins and other damp spots, it forms dense clumps of intense vanilla-scented, flat, bright green leaves and bears in spring loose panicles of flowers. The leaves have long been used as incense to scent churches on Holy Days and for flavouring a wide variety of food and drink – in Poland they add a blade or two to their bottles of vodka for just this purpose! 1½ft (40cm)

    Hierochloe odorata

    Stubborn but rewarding

    Reviewed by Clare on

These took about 3 months to germinate, but eventually the whole packet grew. They needed heat of the summer and moisture. Inspired by fantastic ‘Braiding Sweetgrass’ book - . I’m now looking for advice on how to care for the in the UK and keep them going. If they don’t flower , will they need heat through the autumn/winter?

Thank you for your review. We would normally expect germination results to show in 2 weeks but they do require a very warm temperature which this spring/summer has been lacking and is possibly the cause for the delayed germination. With regards to after care, they are a hardy perennial so should withstand the UK winter. They would prefer a damp, rich soil in full or partial sun but will tolerate most soil types and growing situations. Often used to stabilise water margins/ banks. Site carefully as the grass will spread via its rhizomatous root system. Can be container planted. The Chiltern Seeds Team.

    Better than expected

I ordered these seeds after reading Braiding Sweetgrass by Robin Wall Kimmerer. She said that only 1 in a 100 seeds germinate so I was pleasantly surprised to get some of these seeds to germinate (eventually) and I planted them out in a tub which filled out with the grass. Just need to see if they establish or I need more seed.

Thank you for your review. These seeds can be a little stubborn to get going, we have found temperature is key and they like it quite warm. We hope they continue to do well for you.
