Ah blonde highlights. It doesn't matter what season we're in, whether or it's winter or summer we are always in the market for bringing some chemical sun (otherwise known as bleach) to our strands.

The beauty of highlights is that they're everybody's cup of tea. Want to bring a little brightness to your hair but not ready to go fully blonde? Highlights. Fancy taking your dark locks to a more warm toned brow? Highlights. Feeling like adding a bit of face-framing blonde to the front of your hair? Yep, you guessed it: highlights.

There quite literally is no hair look that highlights can't achieve. Ever since Kim K brought back the chunky highlights trend (TY Kimmy), they've been all the rage, but if streaky strands aren't really your thing that's ok.

Depending on the style you're going for, you can have your highlights applied in a number of different ways. For example, your hairdresser can backcomb each section before applying the bleach and make sure they start relatively low. This creates a more natural-looking balayage style rather than streaky highlights.

There are also baby lights, which involve applying teeny tiny amounts of blonde to very fine pieces of hair. One of the most important things to consider when adding any blonde to your hair is the tone. Decide first whether you want to go warmer or cooler/ashy and make sure you let the hairdresser know. This way you'll risk any nasty surprises at the end of your appointment.

Whatever your colour or texture, we’ve rounded up the best Instagram highlights inspo for you to save and take straight to the salon...
