Count on face and smile detection to make your friends and family look their best. The anti-blink feature will spot blinking eyes and take a second shot immediately, then save only the one with the least amount of squinting. Not sure which special scene setting to use? A smart scene recognition mode selects it for you, so all you have to do is point and shoot. And if your picture doesn't turn out quite the way you wanted, choose from 10 in-camera editing functions to help spruce it up to perfection. Plus, don't forget about the 'T90's HD movie mode; you can record good times as high-definition 720p video.

The camera's built-in 11MB memory holds one or two shots at a top resolution — add optional Memory Stick Duo cards for more storage.

Recording Features

Ultra-Slim Design: The Sony Cyber-shot DSC-T90 Digital Camera packs a lot of performance into an ultra-slim design. The DSC-T90 is slim enough to slip into a pocket, so you can take it with you wherever you go. It is available in four sophisticated colors: silver, black, blue, pink, and brown.

3.0" LCD Touch-Screen: The DSC-T90 has a 3.0", wide-screen, color LCD touch-screen with 230,400 pixels (960 x 240). The LCD touch-screen allows you to view an image before taking a picture, replay images that have been stored in memory, navigate menus, and specify focus points. For best viewing, you can adjust the brightness of the LCD monitor when using the camera outdoors. The LCD monitor offers 3 display setups.

  • Normal: The operation buttons and icons are displayed along with image.
  • Simple: Only the operation buttons are displayed along with image.
  • Image Only: The operation buttons and icons are not displayed; only the image is displayed.

Note: This camera is not equipped with a separate viewfinder.

12.1 Megapixel Image Sensor: A powerful 12.1 megapixel 1/2.3" Super HAD CCD image sensor helps you capture detailed images with superb contrast and clarity down to the finest detail. For optimal image quality, the camera uses a 7.79mm (1/2.3" type), 12.1 Mega-Pixel (Effective) Super HAD color CCD imaging device with approximately 12.4-million gross pixels and 12.1-million effective pixels. More megapixels give you more detail and definition when you make big prints or crop in tight on your subject.

BIONZ Image Processor: The digital camera's BIONZ image processor delivers high resolution photos and fast still photography performance.

DRO Standard & Plus: Dynamic Range Optimizer (DRO) Standard and Plus uses a sophisticated algorithm to determine the best exposure and contrast settings for almost any shooting environment. The result is more natural images with clearer details that more closely match what your naked eye sees. DRO is particularly effective when shooting backlit portraits or any scene with a dramatic contrast between background and foreground lighting. DRO Plus allows for even greater optimization by analyzing each region of an image and performing additional image processing.

Dual Media: This camera has 11MB of internal memory. Even when there is no Memory Stick inserted in the camera, you can record images using the internal memory. This memory is not removable. This camera is also compatible with the following recording media: Memory Stick Duo, MagicGate Memory Stick Duo, Memory Stick PRO Duo and Memory Stick Pro-HG Duo (up to 16GB). All compatible of Memory Stick Duos can be used to record still pictures and moving images with audio. You can copy images from the camera's internal memory to an inserted Memory Stick Duo card.

Note: Although this unit is compatible with MagicGate Memory Stick Duo and Memory Stick PRO Duo media, it cannot be used to record or play back music protected by copyright signals.

Image Recording Format: The camera records still images in JPEG format. Moving images with audio (monaural) are recorded in MPEG4.

Still Image Sizes: When recording digital still images, the DSC-T90 allows you to choose from eight image sizes.

Carl Zeiss Vario-Tessar 4x Optical Zoom Lens:The Vario-Tessar lens is specially produced for very compact cameras. This specialized design allows quick auto-focus, appealing zoom range while still maintaining a compact design. The lens has a 4x optical zoom and a focal length of 6.18mm to 24.7mm, equivalent to 35mm to 140mm in 35mm photography. It has a maximum aperture range of F3.5(W) to F4.6(T).

Precision/Smart Digital Zoom: The camera has a Precision Digital Zoom of 2x. Combined with the 4x optical zoom, the maximum total zoom is 8x. The Smart Zoom intelligently uses the full CCD to let you zoom into the portion of interest by cropping the image size, thus avoiding the image degradation found in most digital zooms. The maximum zoom scale depends upon the image size:

Image Size Maximum Smart Zoom
8M 4.9x
5M 6.2x
3M 7.8x
VGA 25x
16:9 (2M) 8.3x

Double Anti-Blur Solution: The combination of Optical SteadyShot image stabilization and High ISO sensitivity helps compensate for shaky hands, minimizes blur, and allows flash-free shooting to preserve the mood. Optical SteadyShot image stabilization uses a built-in gyro sensor to detect camera shake and automatically shifts the lens to help prevent blur without sacrificing image quality. The Optical SteadyShot function offer three modes:

  • Shooting: Activates the anti-blur function when pressing the shutter button halfway down.
  • Continuous: Always activates the anti-blur function.
  • Off: Anti-blur mode is off.

Shooting Modes: You can select whether the camera captures one image or multiple images at a time. The Shooting Modes include:

  • Normal: Shoots only one frame when the shutter button is pressed.
  • Burst: Shoots up to 100 images in succession when you press and hold down the shutter button; recording interval is as fast as 0.57 seconds (varies depending upon the image size setting).
  • Exposure Bracket: Records a series of three images with the exposure values automatically shifted, one photo is taken under exposed, one is taken over exposed, and the third is taken at the set exposure, select a bracket shift of +/-0.3EV, +/-0.7EV, or +/-1.0EV.
  • Self-Timer: You can set the Self-Timer mode to a 10-second or 2-second delay so you can be in the picture.

9-Point Auto Focus: The camera has a 9-area multi-point autofocus. The camera calculates the distance in nine areas in three rows of three points around the center of the frame. This method is helpful when your subject is not centered in the frame. You can also choose Center AF, which focuses only on the subject framed in the AF range finder in the center of the image, or Spot AF, which focuses on an extremely small subject or a narrow area.

Focus Presets: In addition to auto focus, you can pre-set the focal distance by choosing one of the following fixed focus settings: 0.5m, 1.0m, 3.0m, 7.0m, or infinity.

AF Illuminator: The AF (auto focus) Illuminator briefly provides fill light to focus more easily on a subject in dark surroundings. The AF Illuminator is most useful within approximately 8' of the subject.

Macro/Close Focus: For close-ups of small objects such as flowers and insects, this camera has macro focus capability and a close focus function. With the zoom set all the way to wide, the camera can focus on objects as close as 3-1/4" from the lens in Macro mode and as close as 13/32" in the Close Focus mode. With the zoom set all the way to telephoto, the camera can focus on objects down to 7-7/8" from the lens (macro).

Face Detection: Face Detection technology detects up to eight individual faces and controls flash, focus, exposure, and white balance to deliver accurate, natural skin tones with reduced red-eye. It can also give priority to children or adults. The camera's Face Motion Detection adjusts ISO sensitivity and accelerates the shutter speed when facial movement is detected, reducing blur in the subjects face.

Face Memory: Optimizing focus, exposure, and white balance for a specific face is easier now with selectable facial memory, even when the subject leaves the frame. This feature is perfect at weddings and other events where the goal is always to focus on a certain person.

Anti-Blink Function: The Anti-blink function works to help counter blinking and squinting. When the camera is set to Portrait, the Anti-blink function captures two images, recording only the photo with less squinting. If a blink is detected in other shooting modes, a warning will be displayed after you take the shot so you can determine whether or not you need to take another shot.

Smile Shutter Mode: The Smile Shutter technology automatically detects and captures a smiling face. Simply activate by pressing the Smile Shutter button and the camera will capture a smile the moment it happens. You can also select subject priority (Adult or Child Priority or using the cross key buttons on the camera) and indicate the degree of Smile Detection Sensitivity to high (small smile), medium (laugh) or low (grin).

Scene Recognition: The digital camera automatically detects shooting conditions, such as backlight or a night scene, and then takes the shot. You can select from the following Scene Recognition modes.

  • iSCN: camera detects conditions such as backlight or a night scene and takes the shot using the optimal settings
  • iSCN+: camera shoots one image without using the scene recognition functions and another image using the scene recognition function.

Exposure Modes: The camera features the following exposure modes:

  • Easy Shooting Mode: With Easy Shooting Mode, even beginners can take great photos. In Easy Shooting Mode, easy-to-understand basic instructions are displayed on the LCD screen and the camera switches to all automatic settings with iSCN so you can just take the photo without worrying about settings. The menu is also simplified on playback to provide limited but straight forward operating functions for those afraid of choosing wrong settings.
  • Intelligent Auto Mode (iAuto): Intelligent Auto (iAuto) mode goes beyond traditional auto settings by recognizing and adjusting to scene conditions and lighting, enhancing natural skin tones, and reducing blur. By incorporating advanced features such as Intelligent Scene Recognition, Face Detection, and Optical SteadyShot, iAuto lets you take advantage of the latest Sony Cyber-shot technology without leaving auto mode.
  • Program Auto: This mode allows you to shoot with the exposure (both the shutter speed and aperture value) adjusted automatically while you manually operate other camera settings such as Focus, Metering Mode, ISO and EV.
  • Scene Selection Modes: You can choose from the following Scene Selection modes:
    • High Sensitivity: The camera shoots without flash in low light, reducing blur. Any size image available. Sensitivity increased up to ISO 3200.
    • Hi-Speed Shutter: Allows you to capture fast moving subjects outdoors or in other bright places.
    • Soft Snap: This mode lets you shoot the color of a person's skin with a bright, warm color tone.
    • Twilight Portrait: This mode is used for shooting people in the foreground at night.
    • Twilight: This mode is used for shooting a distant subject at night.
    • Landscape: This mode is used for shooting landscapes at a distance.
    • Beach: This mode is for shooting at seaside or the lakeside.
    • Snow: This mode shoots whitish scenes brightly.
    • Fireworks: This mode allows you to record fireworks in all their splendor.
    • Gourmet: Shoots food arrangements in delicious color.
    • Underwater: Allows you to shoot underwater in natural colors when using an optional waterproof housing (sold separately).
  • Movie Mode: Allows you to record MPEG4 movies with monaural audio.
    • Auto: Adjusts the movie settings automatically.
    • High Sensitivity: Shoots movies with high sensitivity under low light conditions.
    • Underwater: Shoot underwater in natural color when using a water proof housing (sold separately).

Exposure Compensation: Besides auto exposure, you can adjust the exposure from +2.0EV to -2.0EV in 1/3 stop increments.

Metering Modes: You can select Spot, Center-weighted, or Multi-pattern Metering. Spot metering lets you adjust the exposure to the subject, even when the subject is a backlit or when there is strong contrast between the subject and the background. Center-weighted metering measures the center of the image and determines the exposure based on the brightness of the subject. When multi-pattern metering is used, the image is divided into multiple regions and metering is performed in each region. The camera judges the subject position and background brightness, and determines a well-balanced exposure.

High Sensitivity Mode: For better shots in low light, or when you can't use flash, you can set the camera to the high sensitivity mode of ISO 3200. The ISO speed can be also be set to Auto, 80, 100, 200, 400, 800, or 1600. When shooting under dark conditions or shooting a fast-moving subject, you should use a high number setting. When recording high-quality images, use a low number setting.

Built-in Flash: The built-in flash has a range of 3.25" to 14.77' with the zoom set to wide and 1.645' to 10.5' with the zoom set to telephoto. The flash can be set to the following modes: Auto, Forced Flash, Slow Synchro, or No Flash. In Auto mode, the flash automatically strobes when the surroundings are dark. When the flash is set to Forced Flash, it strobes with every shot. In Slow Synchro, the flash is used regardless of the amount of ambient light, but the shutter speed is slower under dark conditions, allowing you to clearly shoot a background that is out of the flash-lit area. In addition, this camera has a "red-eye reduction" setting, which causes the flash to pre-strobe before shooting to reduce the red-eye phenomenon.

White Balance: When the white balance is set to auto, the white balance is set automatically in response to the condition of the subject, and the overall color balance is adjusted. When shooting under special lighting conditions, you can select the settings manually. When using flash, you can select the flash white balance mode. In addition to Auto and Flash, the white balance can be set to Incandescent, Fluorescent 1 (white fluorescent), Fluorescent 2 (natural white fluorescent), Fluorescent 3 (day white fluorescent), Daylight, Cloudy, One Push (adjust white balance depending on the light source) or One Push Set ( memorizes the basic white color which will be used). The unit also feature Underwater White Balance when using the camera with an optional underwater housing (sold separately). You can choose from Underwater Auto, Underwater 1 (Blue), Under Water 2 (Green) or Underwater Flash.

Picture Effects: When desired, you can select one of the following picture effects:

  • Normal: normal color tones
  • Vivid: bright and deep color
  • Sepia: sepia-toned like an old photograph
  • B & W: in black and white

Histogram: A histogram is a graph showing the brightness of an image. The graph display indicates a bright image when skewed to the right side and a dark image when skewed to the left side.

Grid Lines: The cameras on-screen grid lines make it easy to set a subjects horizontal and vertical position.

Function Guide: An on-screen function guide text/icon display makes it easy to learn the camera functions that give you greater creative freedom to adjust photo settings.

Date and Time: Each time you take a picture, the camera records the date and time. The date and time are not superimposed on the picture, instead saved in a data file along with the image.
