Katie Holmes, 44, shows off gray roots during a casual appearance in New York City where she chats up a man on the street

Katie Holmes looked relaxed as she stepped out in New York Friday.

The 44-year-old actress and director, who often enjoys a stroll through the Big Apple, kept her look simple, wearing a navy blue hoodie and loose fitting navy pants with sneakers.

Her long chestnut locks were styled straight and some gray hairs were noticed in the Alone Together star's bangs and temple area.

The bangs are a recent addition to the Dawson Creek alum's look.

The single mom, who shares daughter Suri, 17, with her ex-husband Tom Cruise, 61, appeared to be wearing natural looking makeup.

In a 2020 interview with InStyle, the No Apologies actress spoke about becoming more confident as she grows older.

'People say you don't really know yourself until you're 40,' she explained.

'I have seen things. I have experienced things. I know what I'm talking about, and I know that my feelings and my insights are worthy. I'm going to listen to myself instead of deferring to someone else. That's a big step as a human. It takes time.'

'When I started, it was about being very mysterious. You were known through your work. There was much less attention in the '90s than there is now, and as a young actress, you just want to get the job. You want to be liked. You want a good take and think, "Was I good enough?"' she explained.

'Over time there's a transition. I have my own confidence now. I'm not looking for somebody else to say, "Good job." It's more, "What are we going for?" It's more collaborative.'

Katie's latest collaboration was for the film Rare Objects, which was based on Kathleen Tessaro's 2016 novel of the same name.

She also served as the movie's director, helped produce the project and co-wrote its script alongside Phaedon A. Papadopoulos.

The feature focused on a young woman who attempts to rebuild her formerly turbulent life while working at an antique store.

In addition to Katie, the project's cast included the likes of Alan Cumming, Julia Mayorga and Derek Luke.

Rare Objects was released simultaneously in theaters and on demand on April 14th and received mixed reviews from critics, earning a 43% rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

Holmes spoke about Rare Objects during an interview with Variety, explaining what attracted her to the project which was years in the making.

'I was drawn to the female friendship and this metaphor of "you are more beautiful for having been broken,."' she told the outlet.

The budding director is looking forward to stepping behind the camera again.

'I don't necessarily have to act in things that I direct. But if there's a great role, and that makes sense, I'd love to do it. It's exhausting to do both,' she stated.
