The Flight Attendant's Michiel Huisman has opened up about his latest role in upcoming thriller Angela Black, promising viewers a "very dark" and "nasty" character.

Huisman – who played Alex Sokolov in the Kaley Cuoco-led Flight Attendant – will star alongside Liar's Joanne Froggatt in the new six-part series for ITV, taking on the role of Olivier, the titular character's abusive husband.

Speaking to Digital Spy and other media about the psychological drama, Huisman teased a "really complicated" plot that proved "challenging" for him as an actor.

"As the season progresses, I'm like, 'Am I lying now? Am I thinking that she doesn't know? Who knows what?'" he explained.

"I think it shows this really messed up side of Olivier, that he's willing to go so far in setting Angela up, [using] some really psychopathic strategies. And I think that that was challenging sometimes for me."

Admitting that he enjoyed taking on a role that was more "nasty" than "charming", the Game of Thrones star continued: "I always feel like I more often get the opportunity to play a character that is a much more positive force, that is very charming.

"So I loved using that, and then playing somebody who's very nasty. You just really go into it, you dive into it – in this case, for a couple of months – and then you leave it behind you and don't do a character like that straightaway again, because it is a challenge."

"I love to take that upon myself as an actor," Michiel added, "but it's always very dark."

'Very dark' it may be, but Angela Black viewers needn't worry about getting themselves too caught up in the show's twists and turns – after all, Huisman's co-star Joanne Froggatt recently hinted at a "very satisfying conclusion".

Angela Black airs on Sunday, October 10 at 9pm on ITV.

The Flight Attendant, based on the book of the same name by Chris Bohjalian, airs on Sky Max and NOW in the UK and HBO Max in the US.
