She might be most celebrated as a fashion icon - after all, the London-born multi-hyphenate is part of the oh-so-rare 1990s supermodel elite, has been awarded just about every fashion accolade imaginable, and is awaiting a new V&A exhibition celebrating her influence in the industry - but Naomi Campbell has made an indelible mark on the world of beauty, too.
The first Black model to appear on the cover of TIME magazine, an activist and trailblazer, Campbell has been a force for change within the beauty industry. At 51, she appeared as the global face of Nars Cosmetics and Pat McGrath and, during a four decade-long career, has served endless sensational beauty inspiration, from closing the Balmain show this Men's Fashion Week gone by resplendent in a gold headpiece to sporting her go-to smokey eye and pin-straight hair on the red carpet.
Pat McGrath, who has been the MUA behind some of her most memorable make-up looks, created something of a signature make-up look for the supermodel, with glittering lids and glossy lips front and centre. Meanwhile, Sam McKnight, the man responsible for tending to her hair tells ELLE UK: 'I’ve spent a lot of amazing times with Naomi. Giving her Afros, little bobs, Minnie Mouse ears, short wigs, blonde wigs; we’ve been through many, many looks with Naomi over the years,' he says. 'One of my real iconic moments with Naomi was when she fell out of her shoes at Vivian's show and Yasmin Le Bon and I were looking at the monitor on the show and we really thought she had broken her ankle, but up she bounced back up with a smile.'
'She is a star,' he notes. 'I mean she just knows how to work clothes and take an amazing image. She owns the photoshoot or the runway and I just think it's absolutely incredible.'
