Middlesbrough FC's Riverside Stadium construction captured in these 13 fantastic archive photos

Fans might remember choosing the name of the new grounds between Riverside, Middlehaven, Erimus or Teesside-Erimus

Last summer marked 25 years since the construction of Middlesbrough FC's Riverside Stadium.

The £16m stadium took almost nine months to build and opened with a capacity of 30,000. A big leap up in numbers compared to their former Ayresome Park grounds which held 26,667.

When Riverside Stadium opened the corner seats were not yet installed. They were finished three years later and cost a huge £5m to bump the stadium capacity to 35,000.

The decision to leave their old stomping grounds came after the Taylor Report which required all top division football stadiums to be all seater and they were unable to expand Ayresome because of its residential location.

The club decided to built an entirely new stadium and the job was given to Teesside Development Corporation offered the Middlehaven site and Taylor Woodrow Construction got to work.

The first game played in Riverside Stadium was a 2-1 win over Chelsea on 26 August 1995 where Craig Hignett and Jan Age Fjortoft scored the winning goals securing their place as the winners.
