I Have Watched Winona Ryder’s New Marc Jacobs Spot 1,000 Times

It's mesmerizing.

Theoretically, I suppose, Winona Ryder is selling me fah-shun in this Marc Jacobs ad posted to the brand's Instagram page. However, I have been too busy trying to come up with clever “Got Milk” jokes (Got Milk Interrupted? Stranger Milks?) for the past hour to notice the bag she's holding. In the short clip, the actor is sporting an early-’90s haircut and the bright green J Marc Shoulder Bag. She takes a long drink from a glass of milk, which spills all over her cleavage, as spooky scary audio plays in the background. It is bizarre and it is mesmerizing. I’m sure there must be some joke or pun here that I'm missing, but I kind of don't even care.

Ryder and Marc Jacobs go way back. She's starred in many of the designer's campaigns over the years, from the time she was first featured as the face of the brand in 2003. Now reunited with the designer, Ryder has tapped into her Tim Burton era for this campaign, styled by Emma Wyman in archival runway pieces and the signature KiKi boots, per Grazia

But cheeky, self-referential ads are kind of Ryder and Jacobs's thing. Their first campaign together was after Ryder was caught shoplifting, among other things, a Marc Jacobs sweater. She then showed up to court wearing a variety of chic Marc Jacobs ’fits. In the 2003 ads, Winona Ryder is photographed clutching a shoe with a deer-in-the-headlights look in one photo and standing next to a table with a pair of scissors in another—which are references to her infamous shoplifting case. “I asked Winona to do the campaign because I thought she looked so beautiful in all these pictures that we've seen recently, regardless of whether they were from the trial,” Jacobs told Hello! magazine at the time.

Icons, both of them.
